Whenever you appear in your ielts speaking test the very first part you come across is the PART 1 of your speaking. Along with that, most of you would be aware that most of the time the questions are such that you need to answer in either positive or negative way, that is, say yes or no. However, saying it in a flat tone can reduce the graph of your band scores as, speaking is all about giving a clear but impressive response. Therefore, this article is going to help you in learning that what can you say instead.

1) The most common types of questions
So before giving you tips let’s discuss that what do the basic questions look like about which we’re discussing. Have a look at some of these questions below:

“Do you like hip hop?”
“Can you swim?
“Do you have any pets”
Can you drive?
Do you like reading?

And the list never ends. These type of questions normally come in the form of –

“Can you…”

“Do you…”

 “Is it…”

 “Are you…”

Whilst giving your IELTS speaking interview the candidate always needs to keep few things in mind while answering yes/no questions. Some of them are given below:

The yes or no type of questions are also called open and closed type of questions. These are the questions, that can be answered with simple language. The answers to these questions will be in a single word most of the time

However, you need remember that these questions have to be elaborated and well explained when you face them in the speaking test because answering the questions only by saying Yes or No may not acquire you your required and desired band score.

3) What can be done?

When encountering these questions the method which you can utilize is using phrases. They can help you to enhance and elaborate your answer and simultaneously give a variety of vocabulary. Some of these phrases are explained below along with some examplary questions.
Have a look:

Question: Do you read a lot?
Answer: Honestly speaking, although it is a good habit I know, but I’m not really much into it as I find it boring.

Question: Do you watch a lot of movies?
Answer: Certainly, I’m a big fan of watching bollywood and hollywood movies, especially the ones which are thriller or comedy.

Question: Is it hot in your country?
Answer: Well, that depends. In summers it can get quite scorching, but in winters it is freezing cold in many parts of my country.

Question: Do you like the city you live in?
Answer: Naturally, I love my city. I have been born and brought up in this place and it’s really close to my heart.

So this is basically how you can increase your score with some simple phrases.
The key is to always add some details or explanation to your answer.

So add this to your speaking and enhance your score.
