Academic Writing Task 1
The bar charts show details of education and homelessness in the U.S. for the year 1997. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The multiple bar charts is a representation of education and homeless in the U.S. for the year 1997, categorized into three, those with less than high school diploma, those with high school diploma and those with high qualifications.
Among people who did not have a high school diploma, the number of those who had families but no home was the highest. They recorded 53%. While 21% of this group had a high school diploma, a slightly higher rate (27%) had a higher qualification. In the next category, i.e. single people with no home, the difference in ratios was not striking. Whereas those under high school diploma and those with high school diploma recorded more or less the same percentages (37,36), people with more than high school education were 28%. In the third category, i.e. regular U.S. citizens, an impressive 45% of them had higher qualifications. 30% of them had at least high school diploma. It is, however, a matter of interest to note that 25% of them did not have even high school diploma.
Overall, it is noteworthy that a substantial proportion of the homeless in the U.S. had at least a high school diploma in the year 1997.

You went to the local hospital’s Emergency Department with your young child who had severe stomach pains. You had to wait for almost four hours before your daughter was treated by a doctor and, while you were waiting, you were constantly ignored by the other staff. Write a letter to the Registrar, complaining about the service you received.

It is with extreme pain that I write to you. Yours is one of the most reputed hospitals in town, at least that was the impression given to me. However, after having had as experience that I am not likely to forget for a long time, I am not willing to admit it. Now, let me explain the situation.
This morning, I and my wife took our seven-year-old daughter to your Emergency Department as she was suffering from acute stomach pain. The girl had been writhing in pain and wailing. We sought admission to a doctor urgently, but were warded off with a curt response that the doctors were busy. In our fear and anxiety, we approached several of your staff repeatedly with please but were invariably ignored. We had to wait for four hours before we could get admission to a doctor. Meanwhile my child had slumped almost as if lifeless.
I wonder that an Emergency Department in a hospital means. I hope you would at least register a parent’s feelings of pain.

Illiteracy has traditionally been viewed as largely a third world problem. However, it is becoming apparent That in countries such as USA, Australia, illiteracy is on the increase. Discuss the problem causes of this and its effect on society.

Illiteracy, an all-time impediment for progress, has hitherto been considered as an acute problem prevalent in the developing world only. However, in recent times, it has become a serious problem in the developed nations such as Australia and the United States as well. This essay attempts to analyze its causes and effects on society.
At the outset, the immigration of refuges is one of the causes for increase in illiteracy in Australia and the United States. Natural as well as man-made calamities produce a large number of refugees and some of them get asylum in the developed countries such as Britain, Australia and the United States. Some of them have no education enabling them to lead productive and useful lives. Probably, government measures to provide them will education and other amenities of life fail to reach everyone in need of such help.
Another problem associated with illiteracy in Australia and US is the increase in the number of people who are unable to participate in the mainstream life. For example, the former American resident, George Bush Jr., had mentioned on several occasions about the need to find more English teachers to teach illiterate people in the US. The apparent lack of interest on the part of illiterate parents to send their children to school adds to the despondent (= disappointing) situation.
Briefly, the prime reasons for illiteracy in some developed nations are regugee1 influx and the apathy of parents towards education. These may result in increase in unemployment and crime rates and other socio-economic problems.

Initially, I did enjoy but with time I am losing interest
What was your favorite activity when you were a child?
As a child, we had plenty of outdoor activities because internet and computers were not that popular then. Most of the time, we spent time going to parks or visiting the zoo or playing around with friends. My favorite activity was playing cricket with my friends.
How have kids’ activities changed since you were a child?
Earlier kids had more time for their hobby classes or sports but these days with the kindor competition they are facing at the academic front which is so stressful that they barely get any time for any other extra activities
What is politeness in your opinion?
Polite behavior helps to build relationships with people, and it is a way of respecting
When you were a child who taught you to be polite?
Actually nobody really taught us, this came to me pretty naturally as I grew up seeing my parents being polite and giving respect to others
Why is it important to be polite to people?
Well, as someone said you exactly get what you give so if youwant respect you need to give it first. It represents the culture and etiquettes of your family and roots. Some people are very rough in their behavior and they get nothing by being aggressive.
Will you continue with this in the future?
I’m not sure about it because I don’t enjoy this field anymore for some reason. I started with the tremendous zeal but in the midway I feel I’m losing the traction for this line of interest. Let’s see what the future unfolds for me.

I was always fascinated by the different languages, so I decided to learn French in school but it was very basic. As I grew older I realized that a language is a doorway to a particular culture, and learning a new language enables a person to have a red broader understanding of that race or culture. With intent to fine-tune my French Language, my father enrolled me at Alliance Francoise, Ahmedabad for summer crash course It’s an internationally recognized French language school and cultural center. It’s situated not far away from my home, and I remember having joined twice in the past-in fact, back to back years to master French language. The crash course was of two-month length which included from Level A1 to Level B1 level of this language. This course gave me an opportunity to practice French. I participated in various activities of discussion and watched a few short French movies with the subtitles. It was full of fun and unlimited learning. Later in my career, I took it seriously to further fine-tune my language. This whole exercise bore the positive fruitions I became a multi linguist, armed with my mother tongue, regional language and of course, Hindi language along with English and French language. During my learning of the language, I read a lot of French literature, practice on my accent and pronunciation like a native speaker. We were given many exercises on how to enhance our proficiency and it was then tested by the formal examinations. I wanted to work part time in the hospitality industry for fun. Yes, you heard me right for fun. So, I applied the skills of French language at few heritage hotels where they have foreign guests who are not well versed with English Language. The MD Hotel hired meand my job was to communicatewith the guests in their dialect and introducing them to our culture. Apart from earning a very good remuneration, it has opened many doors in terms of meeting people across the globe.
PART 3 – Discussion
Do other people ever ask you for advice or help about that subject?
Yes, people have approached me to help them after getting to know that I earn pretty well through this job which is fun, interesting. Some people come to me because they want to translate something technical or academic material from Frenchto Hindi or Gujarati or the other way round. I don’t mind it since it’s a thankful job at the end of the day.
Who pays for this adult education?
There are certain courses subsidized by the government or students pay from their pockets to the courses available in the private collages. In some cases, corporations sponsor their employees for some courses by which both the parties reap benefits in the long run
In the future, do you think more adults will enroll in courses of study?
Yes, I think more adults will be enrolling in courses of study, may be to help satisfy their personal needs and achieve their professional goals. Some universities have introduced online distance learning courses to tap this market and the student numbers are growing for sure.
Do you think adult education in useful?
Yes, It’s absolutely useful as there is no age limit or time to education. People attend adult education because they want to achieve professional growth and improve job skills. I guess this motivation is the chief driving force behind learning. By doing so, it will question their conventional wisdom and stimulate their mind.
