  • Mention the name of the borrowed book, and the due date for returning it

I will be returning the book to you within the next three days. I am prepared to pay the fine for default.

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT)

Character is influenced by the environment rather than by genetics. How far do you agree?

While a person’s physical features are attributable (=caused by) to hereditary factors, behavior is the product of the environment rather than genetics. Genes decide a person’s physique and intelligence but individuals develop their manners and character by observing the surroundings. This essay attempts to state that the environment plays a greater role in molding one’s character because of three reasons.

Firstly, character is usually influenced by one’s family but, in the absence of it, one learns it from the society. For example, an African child who grows up with a family somewhere in the West will show no trace of behavior found in that person’s native society in his childhood. This individual certainly will not speak their native language either.

Secondly, the world is benefitted by the innovative ideas of many renowned scientists. With little or no formal education, Thomas Crompton, Michael Faraday and Thomas Alva Edison rose to the zenith of name and fame. In general, neither the predecessors nor the successors of these scientists seem to have made any contributions to science.

Thirdly, it is clear that people achieve many things in life because i=of their own efforts. In doing this they draw guidance and support from the society in which they live, if these were because of genetic factors, the children of scientists would be scientists and the children of military men would be military men. Behavioral scientists firmly believe that it is possible to shape a child into anything be training and education.

In summary, there are several arguments to support the fact that it is the environment, rather than genetic factors that shapes individuals’ behavior.

PART 2 – Cue Card

Describe one time when the weather changed your plan.

You should say

  • When this happened
  • What plans you had to cancel
  • What kind of weather you experienced

What did you do instead, after the weather made you change your plan?

There have been many instances in my life when I have had to change my plans because of the weather. Where I live, sudden weather changes don’t usually happen, but in some months we randomly get a few days of clear skies and a few days of thunderstorms and rains. One such instance I would like to discuss here is a time from many people years ago. It was the last day of college, before Diwali. During Diwali we used to get a long 10 day break from classes. So, most of us would usually go out of town with our families. However, my friends and I had planned to leave for our vacations after a day or two. So, on the day before Diwali breaks begun, we made plans to visit a nearby bird sanctuary is located about an hour away from the city by car. One of my friends had a jeep large enough to fill all seven of us. We had arrived at college that morning all prepped up to bunk the last lecture, our picnic baskets were packed and waiting in the morning, the weather had seemed perfect for such an outing. However, by the time we decided to make a move, the skies became overcast. We ignored this slight alteration in weather and continued on our journey. About fifteen minutes after we had hit the road, however, it started drizzling, then raining a little fast, and then pouring cats and dogs. There was no point driving all the way to Thol in such weather. Further, it was not even safe.

But, instead of feeling upset, we simply parked the car, got off, and let the rains drench us to the bone. Such showers have always been welcomed by people in my city, even if they are unseasonal, because most of the year, the city stays very hot. We were no exception to the rule. In a few minutes hawkers selling freshly roasted corn and deep fried lentil fritters started crowding the sidewalks, as was the norm. My friend and I queued up and helped ourselves to the classic monsoon munchies, while still getting wet in the rains. After spending a few hours in the rains, my friend dropped us all home, and tried yet satisfied, we called it a day.

PART 3 – (Discussion)

Where can people get weather reports from?

People can get weather reports from daily newspaper, the television, and the internet. These days, people often get up to date weather reports from mobile weather apps, too.

How do weather reports affect people’s lives?

Weather reports help people plan their outings and trips. They help people decide when to and when not to schedule important meetings. Further, weather reports help Safeguard people by giving timely information regarding the possibility of extreme weather conditions. On rainy days, weather reports act as reminder to us, to carry out raincoats and umbrella.

What do people do on rainy days and sunny days?

On rainy days, people get drenched in the rains, go for long drives, enjoy monsoon-specific street foods, and listen to melodious nostalgic music if they are stuck in traffic jams. Roads often get waterlogged so offices and schools remain shut, giving people surprise holidays at times. On sunny days, people wear reflective pastel colored clothes in comfortable materials like cotton and linen, set out on picnics with their family members and friends, and Go out window shopping. They also enjoy ice creams and ice lilies, which are very popular in my city.

Has climate change affected your country?

In my opinion, climate change has started to affect my country in the last decade very noticeably. Summers start later than usual, writers are either too cold or not cold at all, and remain instead of being intermittent like used to, have become quite scattered. We frequently have flood like situations for a few days in the monsoons, followed by worryingly long dry spells. There are made up for, by unseasonal rains during the summers. This has affected the ecosystem at large, confusing the birds and animals as regards their migrating patterns and breeding times. Further, people find it difficult to make plans relying on seasonal patterns. Many open air functions have started getting cancelled or spoiled because of unseasonal rains.
