Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

31st January, Today's Task

The bar chart gives information on the number of Americans who experience a heart attack in a year based on their gender and age groups.

As is presented in the diagram, more than 120 thousand American males between 29 and 44 years get a heart attack while it is scarcely the case among the women of the same age group. The heart attack rate considerably goes higher with the increase of the age and for the Americans over 65 years, this rate is the highest. While over 420 thousand males suffer from this in a year who are middle-aged, it is noticeably lower for women from the same age group. However, Americans over 65 years old suffer from a heart attack the most regardless of their gender and 440 thousand males have had it in a year against the 374 thousand.

In conclusion, males have a significantly higher rate of myocardial infarction, a medical term used for heart attack, than that of females and older Americans are more prone to have heart attacks than young ones.

General Writing Task 1

You recently joined a course, but due to some reason would not be able to continue it. Write a letter to the course provider. In your letter

  • Introduce yourself
  • Explain why you cannot continue
  • Suggest an alternative

Dear Sir,

I, Sonia Malhotra, An Assistant Professor in Punjab University, have recently joined a one month evening course for learning French at Beginner’s level in your esteemed institute, which I would not be able to continue.

I am employed as full time regular faculty at the above said institute for which my working hours are 9am to 5pm with busy schedule which includes taking theory and practical classes of the students. So, I have difficulty in maintaining my regularity at your institute where the timing of my course is 5pm to 8pm daily. Due to this, I am not even able to finish my daily assignments, of your institute as well as of my University.

I would like to discontinue the course in your institute due to these reasons with immediate effect and would again join this course in the month of June when I have my summer vacations so as to give full justice to the course.

Hoping for a favorable response

Yours sincerely

Sonia Malhotra

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT)

It is often argued that children must be protected from unsuitable materials on TV and the internet by government censorship. Other says that it is the parents’ responsibility to control what their children do and watch. Which opinion do you think is true? Why?

Sample answer: –

The entertainment aspects of both the TV and internet are often more mature than what children can be permitted t watch. Governments may impose reasonable restrictions and censor materials which are harmful to children. However, ultimately it is the onus (=responsibility) of parents to prevent their children from falling prey to the danger of watching scenes which are not appropriate for their age.

Most importantly, parents should motivate their children to spend more time with their peers and to engage in outdoor activities so as to develop their physical and mental faculties. For instance, when my uncle’s children were directed to badminton, they reduced their time browsing the internet. When children find sports and cultural activities more entertaining and enjoyable, the tendency to spend their time before electronic gadgets will naturally subside.

Then again, parents can educate their children about the harm caused to their body and mind by the excessive use of TV and the internet. Indeed, parents can encourage their children to enjoy human relationships more than the programmes on TV and internet, by making their family life more harmonious and intimate. To develop intimacy, it is better for parents to share time with their children and show active interest in their educational and recreational endeavors (=efforts).

Briefly, it is up to the parents to make family life enjoyable for their children. When children feel that they are loved and their parents’ priority is their welfare, they will learn to value human relationships more and, consequently, they will be able to use TV and the internet more judiciously.

What like the most about my hometown, Ahmadabad is it has a blend of the old and the new. The river Sabarmati divides the city into two physically district regions: eastern and western. The eastern bank of the river houses the old city with the beautiful architecture and the entrance of the old city is surrounded by the gates. All which is a well developed city with a great connectivity to the communication, New City Lake, restaurants, theatres, shopping malls and others.

My hometown has a very rich heritage culture. People out here are great food lovers; you will find some amazing food joints in the old city of Ahmadabad in the narrow lanes and some very good restaurants in the New City of Ahmadabad with the soothing ambience. Ahmadabad is famous for many festivals but the main is Navratri; ‘Nav’ means 9 and “Ratri’ is night. It’s the festival of nine nights where men and women are dressed in colorful traditional attires. My mother was always concerned about good health so most of the time we had home-cooked healthy food and once a week we were allowed to eat junk food. We had certain designed types of food. For example, on Tuesdays my mother ensured the food with less cholesterol and less oil. She was a health freak so she had disciplined our eating habit, too.

Do you think you will give your own children the same type of food? [Why/ why not?]

Yes, till the time they are with us at home, I shall certainly give them a balanced diet but once they move out for their further studies, they don’t really know what they would really eat but I am sure till then they would have learnt the art of good food habit.

Part 2 – Cue Card

Describe an article about health living that you read from a magazine or from the internet.

You should say

  • In which magazine/ on which website you read it
  • Who the article was written by
  • What the article was about?
  • Why do you like the article?

I read a lot of article online, as well as in magazines, in my free time. At office, when I want a small break from my routine tasks, I often resort to articles on healthy living, wellness, Self-help. Such articles inspire me to be more health conscious and to improve the quality of my life. One author whose articles I particularly enjoy is Paul McKenna. This international bestselling author is a renowned hypnotherapist, who has also been recognized as one of the world’s most important modern Self-help gurus by The Times of London. While I have read a lot of Paul McKenna’s book experts, the one I remember most is his write up on becoming thin without consciously dieting. He said that often people’s diets failed, not because of the things they ate, but because of the things they thought. In this particular write up, the author showed ways to reduce weight in a healthy manner, without resorting to calorie counting or low fat recipes. In fact he said nothing whatsoever about what to eat and what not to eat. Instead he detailed methods to lose weight through healthy Self-help, by encouraging readers to bring about a transformation in the way they think. Further, Paul McKenna mentioned various negative patterns that people followed in life, such as obsessive dieting, emotional eating, faulty mental programming, not eating when one is hungry, not eating what one wants to, not eating consciously, and not being sensitive to the limitations of one’s appetite. He gave pointers to overcome these negative patterns, in order to bring oneself closer to one’s ideal weight. I read this article in an online newspaper, whose name has slipped out of my mind. However, McKenna’s articles are easy to find online, and his books are available in stores everywhere. I liked this article for many reasons, but mostly because all the things mentioned in it resonate with my idea of health and wellbeing. I cannot help but notice that the article has no logical fallacies, even though the author does not detail anything quantitatively. Often such Self-help articles run the risk of becoming too abstract, but this article does not fall into that trap. It is helpful, concise, and worth a read.

 Part 3 – Discussion / Follow ups

Why do magazines have health related articles?

These days, people are becoming very conscious about their health, and with increasing life spans, everyone wants to ensure that they are able to make the most of their bodies till the end of their time. Further, word of mouth has always been a very effective communication tool in India. Elderly people who do not use gadgets and are not savvy tens to derive their information regarding healthcare through this channel.

Are there any negative influences of health related information?

Usually health related information does not pose negative influences; on the contrary it raises awareness regarding healthcare and wellness among people. However, at time because of easy access to free messaging services and the internet, many quacks and Self-confessed health experts spread rumors regarding healthcare. Such false information can prove lethal at times. Another negative effect is that people resort to Self-diagnosis and run the risk of medicating themselves incorrectly, or even overdosing.

Do most young Indians have a healthy lifestyle?

I would not go so far as to say that most young Indians have a healthy lifestyle, because in my opinion a lot of youngsters are eating all the wrong kinds of food, very frequently. Eating out has increased manifold as compared to just a decade ago; and with eating out, come the negative effects of poor quality ingredients and unhealthy saturated fats. However, many youngsters today consciously get more physical exercise than those of previous generations, by frequently gyms and exercising at home.
