Academic Writing Task 1

The table analyses information about favourite pastimes of people in different countries. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where necessary.

An analytical study of the favourite enjoyed in various countries is furnished in the table given.

Data on all the pastimes of all the given countries is not furnished. From the available data, however, reading is a hobby enjoyed substantiallyin the most countries. 65% of Australia enjoy TV, (62%). Incidentally, it is the only pastime given against their name. Close behind them are 60% each of Koreans and the Chinese in this pastime. Hobbies are enjoyed by mist countries, the Chineseleading among them with 50%. Surprisingly, while sport finds some interest, music does not seem to attract many, except the Americans, at 23% Beach is enjoyed by 30% of Australians and Americans; it finds no charm among Canadians. The most striking feature of the graph is that 40% of the English find sleeping a pastime!

In concluding, people around the world enjoy a number of different pastimes at varying proportions.

General Writing Task 1

You are employed full-time and also doing a part time evening course. You are not able to continue the course. Write a letter to the course director. In the letter, Explainwhy you  cannot continue the course, describe the situation, say what a you will be doing. Write at least 150 words.

I am extremely sorry to write to you that I shall not be able to continue my evening classes with you due to reasons I describe below.

As you know, I am a full-time employee of a small office in town. It was my great ambition to acquire higher qualifications so tgat I would have better prospects. My employer was very understanding and considerate in allowing me to leave office an hour earlier so that I could catch a bus to reach the college. I found the course easy and very interesting. You have also been very kind to me in all ways. However, since two of the employees are unable to attend office due to prolonged illness, my employer regrets he cannot let me off early any more.

Although I am disappointed that I am unable to continue the course, I am not entirely disheartened God willing, I shall some day be able to resume the course. I shall at the earliest opportunity be seeing you express my gratitude in person.

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT)

If countries are serious about solving traffic problems, they should tax private cars very heavily and use the money to provide free or very cheap rail travel. To what extent do yoi agree with the above?

The increase in the number of private cars is* a threat in several ways. In addition to traffic congestion, the amount of pollution caused by them is enormous. They add to the strain on fossil fuels, which are of scarce supply. By considering all these issues, some people argue firmly that imposing very heavy tax on private cars is good so that this money can help in introducing cheap rail travel and, to some extent, this essay agrees to this view.

To start with,although people have some fundamental rights, there are several constraints. Mankind is unable to increase the size of the earth or the availability of natural resources. Construction of roads, for instance l, to accommodate the ever-increasing number of private cars is* a very big problem. Instead of making life comfortable, the unbridled rise in cars will make it more difficult. This drives home the relevance of public transport such as trains.

The second point is, to prevent the excessive use of anything is to make it more expensive by increased taxation. For example, government can levy tax on private cars heavily in order to curb their use. The increased revenue will helpgovernments in improving public transportfacilitythe third point is, governments have to spend resources meticulously. Since public transport serves the maximum number of people, the introduction of decent and affordablepublic transport is a governmental responsibilities. But paying higher tax, people who want to enjoy the comfort and luxury of their cars can do that.

In conclusion, since welfare of citizens is a major task of governments, restricting cars and encouraging public transport is the need of the  day in many countries l, to ward off pollution, congestion and accidents.

I belong to Surat which is a southern part of Gujarat state.

Do you work or study?

Right now, I’m working for Axis Bank. I’m relationship manager.

Do you like sunny weather?

I like sunny weather for many reasons. I do ‘Surya Namaskar’ every morning, so I would say that I start my day with the energy of the sun every morning.

Why is it so?

The sunshine represents a source of energy, and without it, the day would be very dreary for me. However, there is a caveat about the sunshine, too. In India, we have a very harsh temperature during summer and the scorching heat of the sun irritates anyone. Therefore, the sunshine of the early morning is refreshing, and at the same time, the sunshine of the later day is unbearable.

How do people usually convey information to each other?

The best medium of receiving the information these days is through the cellular phone. In the context of India, ‘WhatsApp’ app on the smart phone is in use. People leave their messages with the vital information using this app. If somebody wants to get acquainted with a particular type of information, ‘Google’ is always handy because the moment any keywords is plugged into, there’s an endless list of the related search.

Is it easies to inform somebody now compared to the past?

I wonder how people conveyed their messages in the past. There was a time when we did not have even telephone or cellular phone, and people somehow managed to send and receive information by writing letters. We used to have a telegram system available, too. It was extensively in the past. In contrast, we have a transmission of the information in no time presently. Today, if someone sneezes miles away, the world comes to know about same instantaneously. Thanks to the advent of Internet technology largely for the swift exchange of information.

Why do you think so?

The technology has changed the way we work, and in fact, the way we think also. It is also believed tgat people are more ever connected to one another using this virtual world tgan how they did in the past.

I am very proud of our Indian history and heritage. Thankfully, my grandmother who was an avid (= keen, eager) reader of history infused the importance of history on my mind. I still remember m, when I was in school, my grandmother described the important historical events based on his reading and heresy from generation to generation.

One of the historical incidents has left a great impression of velour (= bravery, fearlessness), patriotism, courage, honour, resilience (= toughness, the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties) and love against all odds on my mind. It’s of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He was the founder of the Sikh Empire. He ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19^th century

The great Ranjit Singh survived smallpox in infancy but unfortunately he lost his left eye. In his first battle with Afghan ruler Shah Zaman who was the descendant of the Ahmad Shah Abdali Dynasty, Ranjit Singh killed the Afghan ruler again sent in his army and routed his army. In the following year, the Afghan ruler again sent in his army but it was no match up with the wit and strength of Ranjit Singh. He bit the dust. One after another war, this great warrior went on running over all his foreign rulers and attackers, and won and ruler the entire Punjab, Kashmir and Kabul in his time. He is popularly known as ‘Sher-E-Punjab’ means ‘Lion Of Punjab’.

Do you like history?

Yes, I do like history because it represents the ancestral values, roots and one’s identity. While recording any historical event, I imagine how the life be then. Most of the tine, I get upset because history is full of bloodbath. I always wish to punish all the civilization. Today, we are stronger than the strongest, and we would have bulldozed them and their lofty aspirations and effrontery.

How do people know of history?

History is taught at the primary level school, and we have many TV serials on the life of great rulers and other heroes of our country. The person like me who takes keen interest in history reads various biographies and stories related to such heroes on the internet and YouTube also.

Do you think only major historical figures are remembered and others are ignored?

Yes, that’s true and it’s very so sad also. Only those personalities who were very popular generally get the listening, leaving the unusual and forgotten heroes behind. Ironically that’s the way cookie crumble.

Why do you think so?

In the past, during the reins of emperors they did not allow others to take pride of their exceptional talent and heroic acts. They were self-centric and always wanted their names only to be carved in the history. The concept of nationstate did not exist during Emperors’ rule. So, at the will of the rule, they were put behind in the darkness of injustice

What cab one learn from history?

It offers people a sense of belonging and pride when they learn about their history. Most countries had gone through a bloodbath for the freedom. Additionally, they will learn about the origin and core values of their motherland. By this way, they will be able to carry forward their customs to the next generation with a story to tell always.
