Performance of the candidate as per the bands in IELTS Speaking section

When a candidate want to get 6 bands in IELTS Speaking but he stuck at 5.5 then the question come in his mind that where I lacked? Or Where I need improvement? This is a frequently asked question that what is the difference between 5.5 and 6 and how the scores are awarded to the students. This post, Performance of the candidate as per the bands in IELTS Speaking section will give the answer to your question.

Speaking Band 5.0

Let’s start with 5.0 bands, if you score this much this means that the candidate was hesitating and he was struggling but on the same time he was trying to speak in flow. Candidate gave short answers, the words and the linking words used by him seemed to be inculcated forcefully.   He was fluent only while speaking simple sentences, in the more complex sentences the coherence of the candidate went bad to worse. There were lots of repetitions of words and sentence structure even the pronunciation was not very good and the candidate was not accurate in word stress.

 Speaking Band 5.5

The 5.5 band score indicate that the answers given by the candidate were short and the candidate was not able to elaborate the answers. He hesitated a bit while using linking words and sometime used linking words incorrectly. His used simple vocabulary but successfully conveyed his thoughts about the subject to the examiner. He was grammatically correct while speaking simple sentences but committed lots of errors in more complex sentences, and left many of them incomplete. Pronunciation was not accurate but he responded accurately to the question asked.

 Speaking Band 6

Band 6 in IELTS Speaking can be defined as – The candidate wanted to talk for a good length and was not answering the questions directly. There were some repetitions of words but overall the speech was fluent. Used the linking words like ‘however’, ‘on the one hand’, ‘then again’, etc. was there but sometimes they were not used accurately. He spoke with some grammatical errors but used the variety of good vocabulary and was easy to understand. The candidate used both simple and complex sentence structures; but it the complex sentences were hard to manage for him in terms of grammar. The pronunciation is mostly correct with occasional errors.

Speaking Band 6.5

If a student scored 6.5 bands which means that the candidate was capable of talking for a long time without much hesitation or repetition. He was easily understandable as his views were in sequence and the usage of linking words was accurate by which he smoothly switched from one idea to another. He used simple vocabulary as well as advance words related to the subject but sometimes the choice of words was inappropriate. Strong accent gets in the way of correct pronunciation.

Speaking Band 7

Score 7 bands stands for – Smooth speaking of the candidate without much effort. The usage of linking words were naturally used and in the right places. The problem was with his answers as they did not cover the whole subject. He used an appropriate vocabulary but not sophisticated and was repeated, the language was fluent but relatively simple. He showed interest in using idioms but sometimes they were not suitable and inappropriate. He had a good control over grammar and rarely committed any mistake. His pronunciation is good and the accent doesn’t get in the way.
