Academic Writing Task 1:-

The table below shows the monthly expenditure of an average Australian family in 1991 and 2001. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer:-

The table shows changes in the spending patterns of an average Australian household between 1991 and 2001. In general, Australian household spending was higher in 2001 than in 1991, but the difference was not significant (AUS715 per month and AUS675 per month respectively).

The amount of monthly spending on electricity and water saw a dramatic increase Over the 10-year period from AUS75 to AUS120. Yet in terms of the expenditure on non-essential goods and services, the rising trend was less obvious with a minor increase of AUS20. At the same time, the amount of money spent on food and housing rose only slightly from AUS155 to AUS160 and AU$95 to AUS100 respectively.

However, there was a decrease in expenditure on the other two items. Australians spent one third less on clothing, which fill from AUS30 to AUS20. Similarly, expenditure on transport dropped from AUS70 in 1991 to AUS45 in 2001.

It seems that food and “other goods and services” were the two biggest items of expenditure. Altogether, they accounted for more than half of the total household spending. By comparison, Australians spent little on dressing up.

General writing Task 1:-

Your friend wants to come to your city and stay with you for one week for a holiday. However, it is impossible for you to accompany him. Write a latter to your friend. In your letter, you should:

apologies to your friend
explain why you cannot stay with him
Suggest an alternative plan for the holiday

Sample Answer:-

Dear Peter,

I am so happy to learn that you are coming to Sydney for the coming holiday. Four years after graduation, we will finally have the chance to meet! However, I regret to tell you that I will not be able to stay with you while you are here.

The reason is that recently I have been promoted to the position of regional manager. Good news, isn’t it? But it also means that I will be relocated to our regional headquarters in Hong Kong. I am scheduled to leave for Hong Kong on Feb. 10, the second day of your visit, so I’m afraid the only day we can meet is the 9th when you arrive.

I don’t want this to ruin your holiday, so I have made an alternative plan. I have made a reservation for you in a Youth Hostel near where I live. The price is reasonable and the service is good. Also, a friend of mine will be with you if you need any help. He is a local Australian and used to work as a tourist guide. I am sure you will have a wonderful time travelling with him.

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-

It is believed that people who read for pleasure can develop better imagination and language skills than people who prefer to watch TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this argument?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience

Sample Answer:-

I agree that reading is thought-provoking and can expand one’s imagination. Furthermore, reading has the great potential to develop one’s language skills in a more subliminal and in-depth way than watching TV.
By reading, we form a mental picture of what the author narrates and depicts. Through the use of words, the author is creating pictures and images of the scenes within the book in our mind. Though we may have finished reading a novel like God Father, we can often ‘see’ certain scenes again with a ‘rerun’ in our mind. Another example is our reading mind may also go along with the multiple reports and stories in a daily newspaper, which helps lift our horizon, develop our cultural enlightenment and enrich our language abilities.

The ability to use language is actually a cumulative build-up from reading. An author should have a large pool of language skills before a volume or an article could be written. By the same token, we read to interpret, understand or even enjoy either for pleasure or for knowledge. In the course of reading, we are wittingly or unwittingly influenced and will turn to use what we have read.

In comparison, TV focuses mainly on visual impact and offers audiences instant gratification. The imagery created is external from our mind and is created by the director and depends on the footage taken, though it could be said that this footage is, in itself, a realisation of the imagination of the director!

From the contrast between reading and watching TV, I think that reading can make a person perfect. The end resulting from reading is long-term whereas that from TV may be temporary and not as significant in potential as reading.

PART – 1 Intro Part

What is your full name?
My name is Parmveer Bansal.

Sure, here it is!

Are you a student or do you work?

I’m a student at Foreign Trade University, which is located on Chua Lang street. My school is about 5 kilometers away from where I live.

Do you enjoy what you study?

Not really. I don’t think what I am learning is practical and there is always a lot of homework and deadline. But my friends at school are really nice. They are the main the reason for me to go to class.

Do you like sharing with others?

Yeah. I share with my close friends funny stories or memes I found on Facebook on a regular basis. It is my way of bonding with friends.

What kinds of things do people not want to share?

Probably personal matters like health or financial issues because many people hate receiving sympathy. Also, to me, money is something that I will never share with others.

Do you think people will share their cars with each other in the future?

Sure, why not? I mean we can reduce the cost and have free company, right? I also heard that robots will drive cars in the future, and if that’s the case, it will be even easier to share a car.

Well, today I am going to tell you about my next-door neighbor, Mrs. Minh, who is a perfect example of an environmentally friendly person.

About Mrs. Minh, she has been my neighbor for at least 4 years now. She is in her 50s and is actually a retired university lecturer. As a neighbor, Mrs. Minh is really kind and helpful as she never refuses to help me when I’m in need. From lending me some cooking spices, to taking care of my little sister when other family members are absent.

But what I find most impressive about her is how environmentally conscious she is, which is why she has been doing a lot of activities to help protect the environment. To be more specific, Mrs. Minh knows so much about the detrimental eﬀects of plastic bags to our planet. She told me about how it would take these bags million of years to completely dissolve and how they can cause severe harm to sea animals. That’s why ever since she moved here, I have never seen her used them once; instead, every time she needs to get the grocery, she brings her own cloth bag… you know, the type that you can bring home to wash and re-use the next day. Other than that, she also participated in many voluntary works to clean up garbage or joined hands in other campaigns involving raising awareness about global warming.

The eﬀort she put into protecting the environment is really inspiring and admirable. In fact, now I am also replacing plastic bags with my cloth bags as often as I could. I always think that good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others; so I know what she does will continue to make bigger changes.

PART – 3 Discussion

Why should we protect the environment?
I think it is essential that we protect the environment since a polluted living environment can have direct eﬀects on our livelihood. For example, air pollution can cause respiratory diseases and cancer, among some other severe diseases; water pollution also destroys our health inside out. Therefore, keeping the environment clean and protected means keeping our lives safe and healthy.

Who are responsible for the protection of the environment?
Since all of us are sharing a home we call Earth, we should share an equal amount of responsibility in protecting the planet. It’s not any government’s duty, it’s a global problem that needs to be solved by all living human. I believe that only by working together would we be able to make a change.

What is the most serious environmental issue now?
As you can see, in big cities like Hanoi, air pollution is one of the most concerned problem. Most people have to wear a mask when they go out to avoid breathing in the polluted air, filled with dust and other toxic exhaust fumes coming out of vehicles. Other than that, I think water pollution is also a prime example. A lot of rivers or even oceans are full of garbage, which definitely contributes to numerous health problems for humans and causes many deaths of aquatic animals.
