SAMPLE ANSWER

The bar graph shows how many trips children between the ages of 5 and 12 took in a particular nation between 1990 and 2010. These students used five different means of transportation—riding in a car, biking, walking, using the bus, and just taking the bus—to go from school to home.

Among the five options, walking was the preferred means of transportation. However, between 1990 and 2010, children ranked cars as their least preferred means of transportation. By 2010, the children’s most and least preferred modes of transportation for getting to and from school were riding in a car and cycling, respectively.

Walking was the most popular travelling method for children in 1990, occupying more than 12 million trips to and from school. In contrast, cycling and bus made about 6 million and 7 million annual trips, respectively. On the other hand, the number of trips made by the combination of walking and bus, and by car, were the least, ranging from just over 4 million to 6 million trips.

In 2010, the most preferred medium of transportation for children was car, with 11 million trips. Walking followed closely behind with 6 million travels each year. Moreover, trips made by walking and bus, and bus alone were also popular, with 3 million and about 5 million trips, respectively, in that year. In addition, with only 2 million trips made annually, cycling was the least used transportation method among the children in 2010.
