The graph below shows the progress of the world’s poorest countries between 2000 and 2018. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SAMPLE ANSWER
The graph shows how the world’s poorest countries have been developing across seven different parameters over the last eighteen years. They are as follows.
Over the period, access to clean drinking water has increased steadily from 50% to over 70%. This is a significant improvement. The line for basic sanitation follows the exact same line of growth, which would indicate that access to water and sanitation are closely linked. Levels of sanitation rose from less than 30% to 40%.
The line that is the most fluctuating is that which shows the availability of electricity. Though it shows an overall increase of nearly 20% there seem to have been some interruptions in growth during that period. In any case, the general increase is quite striking. The use of clean cooking fuel rose from around 12% to 40%, and it increased at the same rate as the availability of clean water and basic sanitation, so they may be associated. There is also an increase in lower secondary school completion, which rose from around 32% to over 50%.
The two factors that decreased were child mortality and the percentage of the population in extreme poverty. In the year 2000, child mortality was at around 14% and in 2006 it dropped under the 10% mark, continuing downwards until 2018 where it stood at around 8%. Similarly, and falling at an even faster rate, was the percentage of the population of people in these countries who live in extreme poverty. This declined from being the majority of the population at over 50% to 30% by 2015.
