SAMPLE ANSWER

There are distinct differences in the climates of Summertown and Springfield, in terms of both temperature and rainfall throughout the four seasons. In terms of temperature, the two cities vary enormously, with Summertown being a much hotter place, but what the two cities have in common is that there is not a striking difference between the seasonal temperatures within each city. Both cities have a variation within their own range of temperatures of only about 15 degrees.

In Summertown, the winter temperatures are the lowest, at an average of about 18 degrees. In the spring and summer this rises to an average of 31 and 34 degrees respectively, and the autumn is not much lower with an average of 29 degrees. In Springfield, winter shows the lowest temperatures at an average of 6 degrees, while in spring and autumn the temperature is around 15 degrees. However, there is a small increase in temperature to approximately 20 degrees in the summer. Springfield does not have extreme summer heat like Summertown, with temperatures being mild all year round.

For precipitation, Summertown experiences the bulk of its rainfall during the summer with an average of 145 mm of rain, which when added to the high temperatures indicates extreme humidity. In winter and spring there is very little rain, ranging from 14 to 17 millimetres, and in the autumn it rises to about 55 millimetres.

Contrastingly, Springfield receives a constant average rainfall across all four seasons of the year. It receives a little more rain in the autumn, but for all the seasons it falls within the range of 45 to 65 millimetres all year round. Springfield actually gets more rain than Summertown in three of the seasons, but during the summer Summertown has more than three times the amount of rain compared to Springfield’s.
