SAMPLE ANSWER

The pie charts show the continents of origin of the foreign-born population of Country A in 1971 and then in 2011. The origins of this population have changed vastly over the forty-year period. In 1971, the overwhelming majority of immigrants were from Europe, with the rest of the world making up only 20% in total. The next largest group was from North America (which can only be the USA) at 10%.

By 2011, the proportion of European immigrants had plummeted to only 30%, while immigrants from Asia, who had barely featured in 1971 at 4%, had risen to become the largest group at 45%. The percentage of immigrants from the USA had halved to 5%. Between 1971 and 2011, figures for Oceania had remained relatively stable at 2% and 1% respectively, but the percentage of immigrants from the two groups Central and South America and Africa had risen to comprise nearly 20% between them.

In 1971, the immigration population of Country A was primarily made up of populations from Europe and the Americas, which constituted of 93% of the total. By 2011, this proportion had changed with Europe and the Americas comprising 46%, Asia at 45% and Africa and Oceania together at 9%. These pie charts only show the distribution of the place of origin. It would also be interesting to see the actual immigration figures to compare the numbers of each population over time, as though some groups are now proportionally smaller in comparison with each other, it is possible that all the continental groups had risen in number with the total growth of Country A’s population over the forty-year-period.
