Sample Answer:-

According to a recent survey in the UK, people attribute poor attendance in schools to a number of causes. The respondents were asked to choose from five causes: upbringing, both parents working, lack of school discipline, peer group pressure and bullying.

First, the way a child is brought up was considered by about 40 per cent of respondents to be a cause of poor attendance. Among the five causes suggested in the survey, this way the opinion most commonly held, whereas only 25 per cent of those asked thought having both parents working might lead to children missing school.

Second, about 15 per cent of people surveyed thought lack of school discipline might also be a contributing factor. The same number of people thought that peer group pressure was a cause of poor attendance.

Bullying was not widely seen to be an important cause, with only 5 per cent of respondents considering it a cause of poor school attendance.

According to the data shown, it appears that poor attendance in schools in the UK is not seen as being attributable to only one category of causes.

GENERAL WRITING TASK 1:-

Last Tuesday you flew from New York to Paris. When you arrived home, you discovered that you had left your cabin bag on the plane. Write a letter to the airline. In your letter, you should explain:

Where and when you lost your bag

What your bag looks like

What its contents were

Sample Answer:-

Dear sir or madam,

I would like to report lost properly. It seems that I left my red cabin bag on one of your flights. Last Tuesday, January 13, I flew from New York to Paris on BA246 with my cabin bag. I put it in the overhead bin. Unfortunately, after the long flight. I must have forgotten it on the plane.

The bag has wheels and two outside pockets. It is locked with a small lock. I had all of my school work and books in it. I also had a new sweater in it. I had just received it as a gift from my cousin in New York.

As you can imagine, these items are very important to me. Please let me know if you have my cabin bag and how I can get it back. Write to me at my return address or email: justinem@newcom.net

I’m looking forward to your reply.

Many thanks,

Justine Manfield

WRITING TASK 2 (AC+GT):-

Some people think that the government should provide unemployed people with a free mobile phone and free access to the internet to help them find jobs.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

SAMPLE ANSWER:-

Digital technology has changed the way people access information. Since their introduction in the 1980s, technologies such as mobile phones and the internet have become cheap and commonplace. Some people see this as a window of opportunity to deal effectively with such problems as unemployment. They agree that the government should make mobile phones and the internet available free of charge to anyone looking for a job. I disagree with this point of view for several reasons. In the first place, one of the most common reasons why jobless people cannot find employment is that the skills they have not needed are out of date. Instead of investing public funds in an expensive infrastructure or distributing mobile phones for free to those out of work, the government should organize training programmes that people who are out of work could sign up for in order to learn new skills.

Another argument against the idea is the way the use of the internet and mobile phones would be controlled. It would be technically very challenging to control how these technologies are used. Instead, public money could be used to provide subsidized public transport for the unemployed who, for example, need to travel for a job interview.

Moreover, it would be prohibitively expensive to maintain such a system and ensure that it worked properly. The government could instead invest public funds into training courses for the staff working in job centres to make them more official at helping the unemployed to find jobs.

To sum up, I am convinced that public money should not be wasted on expensive technology. It could be better used to deal with problem of unemployment by giving the unemployed free and better-quality training.

Sample Answer:-

I live in a family oriented culture, which means we have a higher emotional attachment towards each other, as compared to other cultures of the world. This is the reason behind the intensity of our feelings of happiness and sadness, for events happening in the lives of our relatives. Today, I would like to talk about my aunt, who got her US visa in March 2002. My aunt lived in a house separate from ours, and contributed heavily to her home finances from a very young age. She took up a job immediately after her graduation, to support her father in educating his other two children. She even delayed her marriage in a bid to fulfil her duties towards her family. Her family always refused financial help from us and other relatives, because of their high self-esteem. With time, one of her younger brothers graduated in management and got a job, after which their finances started improving. Then, in 2001, my aunt got married to a businessman, who was a US citizen; he then went back to USA and sent his wife the required papers so that she could enter the country. However, we all know that at the time, the most infamous terrorist act of 9/11 had rocked all of the America, and made them very conservative and defensive in issuing visas. My aunt was denied entry twice for no concrete reasons; she was getting frustrated and depressed because of this development. The rest of us were also getting worried for her. I was more concerned about her because I felt she was very genuine and deserved to get a chance to start her life a fresh struggling for so many years. Finally, her husband came back t India and presented himself at the embassy. He was able to convince the visa officer that he was indeed married to my aunt, after which she got the visa. I was at my home on that day, waiting for my aunt’s call from Mumbai. I was anxious, and had been praying to God to help her. Finally I received a call on my mobile and got the good news. We all were very happy for her because now she would be able to join her husband in the US. I immediately went to the temple and thanked God for His kindness. Later, we went to meet my aunt at her home, with sweets and gifts to express our happiness. All in all, this news made me extremely happy.

PART – 3 DISCUSSION

What news can be surprising?

Any unexpected news is often surprising, be it winning a competition, getting very good grades in exams, getting a good job in first few attempts, or winning a lottery or lucky draw. We often feel high levels of happiness when we hear such unexpected news.

What was the importance of that news for you?

That news was of immense importance to me, as I had a lot of respect for my aunt, and held her in high regard because she had helped me in past, when I was a student. To top it, because she was a family member, that news became all more important to me, and brought on a sense of relief.

Which is the best medium for getting news – the newspaper or the TV – and why?

In the context of instant news, television is the best medium. We come to know of any development in the world within just a few minutes of its occurrence. However, if we want detailed information about events, we should rely more on the next day’s newspaper.

Which medium do people use for communication, in your city? Why?

People in my city use mobile phones for communicating with each other, because mobiles provide instant connectivity. With mobiles, we can convey our message immediately and directly to the concerned person, within seconds.
