ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1:-

The bar chart below shows the number of overseas students in first year law course at a college. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer:-

The given bar chart shows the number of overseas enrolled in the first year law course at a college. The horizontal axis distinguishes the male and female students from different countries (Iran, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan and France). The vertical axis shows the number of students enrolled separately in Labour Law and Company Law.

Considering the absolute numbers, it is observed that more male students were enrolled from Indonesia and Japan than from other countries. As for female students, Indonesia and Philippines contributed almost the same number (11 each), closely followed by Iran (10 students). France contributed the least number of overseas students – both male and female (3 each). Also the number of male overseas students is more than the number of female overseas students.

As a student, Labour Law seems to be much more popular among female students from Indonesia, France and Japan. Out of the 20 female students enrolled from these countries, about 17 joined Labour Law. Intriguingly, the position is quite the reverse in case of female students from other countries. Most male overseas students, that opted for the two courses is almost identical.

To summarize, it can be stated that while there are more male than female overseas students, there is no clear preferences of overseas students for a particular course.

GENERAL WRITING TASK 1:-

You had an interview scheduled in a few days but you are unable to go there on the specific date. Write a letter to your potential employer. In your letter:

– Explain the reason

– Request for rescheduling the date

– Elaborate on your interest in working for the company

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to request for rescheduling of the interview that was to take place on 29^th May.

I will be unable to come as my interview with the regional passport officer for insurance of a passport is on the same date. I tried to get the interview date postponed, but the authorities have refused. My application for passport has been pending for long and this appointment has been fixed on my insistence.

I would request you to kindly fix the interview date for some later date, if feasible. This would leave me with a free mind to attend to the necessary details, pertinent to issue of my passport.

Your company has a reputation of being highly professional and employee-friendly. I aspire to work in your company and would be grateful if my request is given due consideration.

It has been said, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books.

In your opinion, which source is more important and why? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

SAMPLE ANSWER:-

Human beings have the capacity to learn a lot, whether it is through books or through life. During their journey through life, people learn things from the beginning to the end. This is part of what we call knowledge. Knowledge has always been the key to success. It helps us in solving our problems and also moulds our attitude towards life. But knowledge comes from diverse sources.

Life can give difference experiences to different people, and different ways to share them. A chef does a proper course of four years. But the cook we have at home – the mother, the wife, even the father, the husband – has learnt the art of cooking from experience and is no less a master.

One of the traditional methods of gaining information or knowledge is books. There are many kinds of books. Some are to be swallowed, some others to be chewed and still some others to be digested. Knowledge from books is a systematic and conscious gain. The transfer of knowledge from books, with or without a teacher, takes place in a proper and systematic manner.

On the other hand, someone has rightly said that life itself is a great teacher – actually a tough one. It gives us all opportunities to learn and evolve, if only through our mistakes. But life rests the decision making power on us, to follow the lessons learnt or not. Time is a great teacher and, as we live by, we learn to navigate through life.

I feel that, though knowledge gathered from books is more accurate and precise, it is actually something that we have experienced, which is very difficult to forget. Knowledge gained from books is important, but one tends to forget it as it seems forced from above. As we traverse the journey called life we face many challenges. The experiences become part of our learning and lead us through the rest of the journey.

To conclude, it will not be prudent to deprive the child from certain facets of education on the false notion that these will not be needed in his professional life. Let the child learn all about his surroundings before he grows up enough to select the fields that he will like to specialise in.

Where do you come from?

I am from Phagwara. It is a small town between Jalandhar and Ludhiana.

Do you often write (or, send) emails?

No, I don’t often write/send emails. I sometimes write official emails, like for sending in a job application through email and sometimes I write to my friends.

What do you write about?

I sometimes write official emails, like sending a job application. When I write to my friends or relatives, it is informal and I ask about their health and well being and tell them about what’s going on in my life.

Do you think emails are useful?

Yes, I think that emails are very useful. Emails are convenient, time saving, cost-effective and easy to send and receive. These days, emails are a good way to communicate for both formal and informal purposes.0

What kinds of emails do you send and receive?

I mostly receive promotional or spam emails advertising various shopping websites or products. I sometimes receive emails from my friends who are living in another country and at times I receive official communication, e.g. emails from the bank or the Income Tax Department.

Do you think it is a good thing that some companies send out letters/spam emails for the purpose of advertising?

I think sending emails for the purpose of advertising is a good marketing strategy and promotes a product or a service. However, it sometimes becomes a nuisance when it is sent repeatedly.

How often do you write letters?

I don’t write handwritten letters any more. If I need to, I send an email. All official and personal letters can be sent through emails now.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

To me, my home is the most comfortable place to read and write, but a close second would be the British Library in my city. Till the first year of my college, when one of my friends told me about this library, I did not even know that it existed. There were other libraries in my city, which were small but well stocked, and I used to visit them from time to time. But, once I visited the British Library with my friend, I realized how much better it was than the others. Located in the city centre, in a stately building, the library housed its collection of books in a large hall in the basement. The hall was air conditioned, and the books were well organized, sorted by genre and language. None of the books were dusty or torn, and there was ample seating for people to work comfortable. That very day, I bought a membership to the library, and started frequenting it. Now, the library has moved to another area, and it is even better. The comfortable tables and chairs, and the quiet, well-lit atmosphere are perfect for me to write chapters of my books, to read reference books, novels, self-help, and even browse through encyclopedias, while simultaneously taking notes. I often even sit there and browse through international newspapers, once my other work is done. It is one of those places that take you away from the hustle bustle of the city, in spite of being located in a very noisy area. The British Library in my city is truly a sanctuary for the mind. It also hosts book club gatherings every week, organizes book readings by famous authors, allows members to interact authors, and holds great workshops for storytelling, creative writing, and other intellectually enriching activities. All these activities are held in a separate section from the reading area, so that no one gets disturbed. The librarians there are very helpful, well read, and well trained. They know exactly where to find which books, and are also great at suggesting good books to those who need help selecting. Because of all these facilities, I think it is good place to read and write.

PART – 3 DISCUSSION

Who likes to read more – young people or old people?

I think old people like to read more, these days, while youngsters have moved to other pastimes. Youngsters have a shorter of attention today, and so they prefer activities that seek lesser involvement of time, and higher sensory involvement. They get this from their hi-tech gadgets with ease, making them less inclined to read. The older people still have good attention spans, and are also more patient. So, they enjoy reading more.

Why do some people dislike reading books these days?

People in recent years have got used to activities such as watching movies, and playing digital games. These activities provide higher engagement of senses, and most people have hi-tech gadgets to facilitate these interests of theirs. In comparison, reading books is more time consuming and has no audio input. Further, there are no moving visuals and a lot is left to imagination in books. So, people dislike reading books these days.

Are there many libraries in India?

Yes there are many libraries in India. While most of the libraries are run by the national government and local corporation bodies, there are some libraries that are founded and managed by private trusts and benevolent individuals who understand the importance of reading and wish to promote and propagate it in society.
