ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1:-

The chart below shows estimated world literacy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SAMPLE ANSWER:-

In this report I will describe a bar chart that shows the estimated world illiteracy rates by gender and region for the year 2000.

First I will look at male illiteracy for the 6 areas shown. The lowest rates were in Developed

Countries, Latin America/Caribbean and East Asia/Oceania with rates of 1% (approximately), 10% and 8% (approximately) respectively. The rates for the next three areas were much higher and quite similar to each other. Sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab States and South Asia had rates of approximately 31%, 29% and 34%. Female illiteracy was much higher relatively in each area except Latin America/Caribbean where it was only slightly higher. The lowest rates for female illiteracy were again Developed Countries, Latin America/Caribbean and East Asia/Oceania with rates of approximately 2%, 12% and 20%. Again the rates for the next three areas were much higher and quite similar to each other. Sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab States and South Asia had rates of approximately 48%, 52% and 56%.

GENERAL WRITING TASK 1:-

Your car has been stolen from outside your house. Write a letter of complaint to the police authority, reporting the theft of your car.

In your letter, give description of

– The occurrence of theft which details, such as time, place and circumstances

– Your car along with details of documents

Dear Sir,

I, Emily Watson, a resident of North Street, would like to bring to your notice the theft of my car. The incident happened yesterday around 6:30 p.m. after I came from my office and parked my car outside my house.

The moment we realized that the car was missing, we frantically searched the entire area immediately but did not find any clue regarding the whereabouts of my car. The car is a 2009 model Ford Figo, blue in colour. The registration number NS 10 M 2135. Engine number of the car is 013AF303. Original documents were in the car, though I have photocopies of the same if you require them for any detail.

Along with the documents of the car, my driving license was also in the car, the absence of which is creating a lot of inconvenience. I request you to take prompt action to locate my car.

With the pressures on today’s young people to succeed academically, some people believe that non-academic subjects at school (e.g.: physical education and cookery) should be removed from the syllabus so that children can concentrate wholly on academic subjects.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ANSWER:-

What young people should study at school has long been the subject of intense debate and this is a question that certainly does not have one correct answer.

We need to provide young people the best possible chance of doing well at school. In traditional curriculum there is a wide variety of subjects with a mix of academic and nonacademic subjects. In this way a young person is formed with a rounded education. Nonacademic subjects would include sports, cooking, woodwork and metalwork. I believe this is the best form of education. A young person should learn things other than academic subjects.

Sport is particularly important. Young people have to learn to love sport so that they can be fit and healthy later in life. If not we will be raising an obese and unfit generation. I totally understand the point of view that education is so important that students must be pushed as hard as possible to achieve their best. It sounds a good idea to only expose the students to academic subjects as then they can spend all of their school hours on studying areas that will get them into university and good jobs later in life.

I just feel a more rounded education would produce a better individual. We must remember too that a lot of people, maybe even most people, aren’t academically minded and would benefit more from a more vocationally based education. Forcing academic studies onto them would lead to failure and the student leaving school too early.

Therefore I agree that although a wholly academic curriculum would suit and benefit some young people, I believe that for most students non-academic subjects are important inclusions still in today‛s syllabuses.

When do you get time to pursue your hobbies?

My hobbies are reading books and listening to music. I can pursue both of these at my workplace and at home. I take small breaks of a few minutes at my office to pursue my hobbies. However, I get more time for them at home, during weekends and on holidays.

How have your hobbies benefited you?

My hobbies have given me immense benefits. Reading books has given me a better insight to understanding life. I have learned in my implemented the knowledge gained from books, both in my personal life and in my profession. This has enhanced my success on all levels. Next, music has always kept me fresh and energized, which is very important for someone in the teaching profession.

What type of hobbies do people of your generations usually have?

Among other things, people of my generation prefer to read books, listen to music, travel, and watch movies. Besides, there are a few new activities emerging as hobbies, too, such as surfing the internet, chatting online, and playing games on mobile phones and computers.

Why do people keep changing from generation to generation?

I think changes in lifestyle and advancements in technology are instrumental in causing a shift in hobbies over generations. With each passing generation, these advancements offer more options to people to choose from, and to pursue. For instance, we can use the internet as a means to pursue our hobbies today; but this was not available at all, before a few decades.

What types of hobbies will the future generations have?

I think most hobbies of future generations will be based on technology. People will play virtual games, travel in space, explore the depths of oceans, make more friends online, and share their lives with them.

If you had an opportunity to pick up a new hobby, what would it be, and why?

If I had an opportunity to pick up a new body, I would learn to play a musical instrument – maybe a guitar, or a piano. I have a great affinity for these musical instruments, and even today I hold the artists who play such instruments in great regard. I will definitely learn to play them in future, if I get a chance.

How are hobbies useful to us?

Hobbies are useful to us in many ways. With hobbies, we can spend our time creatively, helping us gaining expertise in other areas of life, apart from our professions. At times, hobbies can also help us in earning fame and fortune. For example, a friend of mine likes to paint as his hobby. He is now able to sell his paintings and earns handsome amounts from them.

Don’t you think hobbies are a waste of time?

I don’t think hobbies are a waste of time. On the contrary, they enable creative utilization of our time. By pursuing hobbies we can actually develop our hidden abilities, which is very important for our all-round development.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

SAMPLE ANSWER:

Many years ago, I started my business out of a small office near my house, and with dedicated efforts, my team and I made it quite a success. So much so, that we began to run out of space to accommodate clients and new staff. This time had come to move to a new office. We started looking for office spaces, and not before long, we narrowed down on a new commercial building in the city centre. The office was purchased, and the interiors were done up to suit the business type, and my personal taste.

But, now one thing had been nagging me since I decided to move. I was a little wary of losing out on clientele owing to the sudden change of location. We had started telling all our customers about the impending change of location a few months in advance, but I knew this much would not be enough. I also needed to make sure my business became well known in the new area. So, we decided on hosting a grand inauguration for the new office. I prepared for it with much gusto and enthusiasm alongside my team.

I was ideating, planning, coordinating and executing, altogether! My team helped with fine-turning all the small and big details. Once I had selected a cuisine, the office staff helped me select a good caterer, and managed all the bookings and food arrangements. They helped me arrange space for seating our guests, and also sent out invitations, and tried hard to ensure a high turnout of people. My family assisted me in narrowing in on the chief guest for the ribbon cutting ceremony, and the building management took care of valet services.

I was personally in charge of all the decorations, checking on the lighting, and last minute tidying up. My relatives took charge of handing out brochures to people while simultaneously ensuring that all the guests were entertained. My neighbors had assisted in preparing neat little baskets full of goodies for all the attendees, a week in advance. The event started at nine in the morning, and went on till noon. It turned out to be very successful, and we were all very pleased when the guests bid us farewell with big smiles on their faces.

PART – 3 TWO WAY DISCUSSION

Are you good at event management?

I am good at all kinds of management tasks. Event management is one of them. I am very good at people skills and communications. In addition, I am also a very good planner. My mind is organized, and knows the art of staying calm even in apparently stressful situations. I know how to find ways around glitches, and how to turn unfavorable situations around to my benefit. All these skills make me good at event management.

Do you think certified courses in event management are helpful?

Yes, certified courses in event management concentrate on this particular aspect of management, as opposed to a broader MBA programme. In these courses, one get the chance to study in detail all that goes in to managing different types of events with different numbers of attendees. One learns how to arrange entertainment options, food options, and security measures to manage crowds. In these courses, students are also taught how to deal with different agencies and people to get tasks done on time, with perfection.

Are event managers only available for happy events?

Today, event managers are available to manage all kinds of events. Event managers can be roped in to handle unemotional business events, formal conferences and dinners, seminars, and political campaigns and rallies. In fact many people hire event managers to organize funeral services and to do the needful while they deal with their grief in peace, without being bothered about arrangement and formalities.
