ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1:-

The bar chart shows the participation of the U.K. population in various activities according to age. Summarize the information be selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer:-

The multiple bar graph elucidates a variety of activities in which different age groups participate in the U.K.

Sport or physical recreation is the activity in which the highest number of people participates. Apart from people of the age of 85 or more, all the other groups take part in all the given 5 activities.

Around 45% of the age group 18-24 takes part in sport or physical recreation. This rate is noticeably reduced to about 38% in the next age group, 25-34. After a further boost to 41% in the 35-44 group, this ratio experiences an almost steady decline to 8% or so in the last group of 85+. Religious or spiritual groups or organizations find a substantial patronage among all the age groups, especially in those after the age of 65, at around 24%. The youth of 25-34 are the least (17%) in them. Education and training is participated in by about 24% of the 35-44 group. 15% each of the age groups, 45-54 and 55-64 find interest in adult education / special interest group. Parenting / children / youth find favour with 35-44 group (14%) and 25-34 group (13%).

Overall, the U.K. population is engaged in multifarious activities at widely varying proportions.

You are going on a short training course to a foreign country and would require a place to live. Write a letter to the accommodation officer. In your letter

Explain the situation

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to seek information regarding accommodation as I would be reaching Melbourne, Australia on 20^th; April that is 2 months from now, for a 6 month diploma course in Hotel management from The Melbourne University.

I need a single room as the course for which I have applied it taught and require 6-7 hours of self-study, therefore, having a roommate, even if supportive, would be a dilemma for me. My classes would be from 8am to 5pm, so I would not prefer to have lunch facility with it. Moreover, the weather would be extremely hot by this period of time; therefore, having good ventilation would be my priority along with right and effectively working air conditions. It would be an added advantage if the accommodation is near to my college as so to save the transportation fares.

I shall be really grateful to you if you could arrange the above mentioned accommodation at the earliest and at reasonable cost. I have merely 2 months and thus have to make the arrangements accordingly.

Telecommuting’ refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

Sample Answer:-

Telecommuting, the latest trend in work culture is* now becoming popular worldwide. It enables people to do office jobs from their homes with the help of computers, telephones and other electronic gadgets. This essay is to examine how this new phenomenon is going to affect society in the decades to come.

On the favourable side, telecommuting, first of all, is good for people to stay at home for their office work. For example, parents of very small children can enjoy the benefit regularly of this innovation pattern of work. Work becomes more flexible. People do not have to go to office regularly. Thus, it will reduce the volume of traffic and pollution. In addition, it saves a lot of fuel. Big office buildings, accommodating a large number of workers and huge shelves to keep files may become outdated. Offices becoming ‘green’, since they are going to be paperless, is also a bonus.

Of the consequences, telecommuting is defective in a number of ways. More than a place of work, an office is also a place for people to socialize. For instance, in an office atmosphere people learn many aspects of work from their senior colleagues. Spending too many hours at a computer table can cause psychosomatic diseases (=disease which involves both mind and body). People who have less interaction with others lose the opportunity to develop social and interpersonal skills. Effective supervision of work may become impossible since people are working at their own place and at their own chosen time.

What it all add up to is that telecommuting is a new way of work with its advantages and disadvantages. It is wise to think that, as time passes by, the society will develop a necessary mechanism to tide over the difficulties of telecommuting.

PART – 1 INTRO PART

I work with an IT company.

What is considered a typical food in your state?

Gujarat is primarily a place where you see most people are vegetarian due to the influence of Jain vegetarianism. Many communities, however, do include seafood, chicken, and goat in their diet. The cuisine changes with the seasonal availability of vegetables.

Do parents usually have dinner with their children in your country?

Traditionally, Indians have supper together but I don’t know it seems that this culture is under threat for various reasons. If I talk about my family, these days it gets difficult due to different working hours but we do have one meal together. Sometimes dinners are difficult but breakfast is always together. Well, it was about my case but in general, I assume that the same pattern might go. It’s because in the morning there is a high possibility of having food or breakfast together but once you go out of home for your job or study, time files, and it’s difficult to adjust the timing with all.

In your opinion, is it important that parents eat together?

Absolutely, I personally feel it’s very important that parents and children eat together as this is an opportunity to learn and share the personal update. It’s more of a quality time spent with your family.

One book that I can keep reading time and again is the Bhagavad Gita. The Bhagvad GIta is a profound dialogue between two characters of the famous Indian epic Mahabharata. These characters are Arjun, a brave warrior and expert archer of the Pandava clan, and Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu of the Hindu pantheon.

The Mahabharata war was fought mainly on horseback, on elephants, and on foot. Arjun the archer had a fine chariot, and Krishna was his charioteer during the war. At the beginning of the war, Arjun was in a strange predicament as he was faced all his cousins, his teachers, and even his own grandfather. Unable to bring himself to kill them, he dejectedly drops his weapons.

Krishna then begins a dialogue with him, where he counsels Arjun, and gives him lessons on righteousness, duties, sins, and rights. As Arjun asks questions, Krishna replies, and eventually inspires Arjun to wage the war.

At first glance, the Bhagavad Gita may simply be an interesting read. But, as one delves deeper, profound truths of life start emerging from the next. It had been written poetically in 700 verses. One can relate to Krishna’s teachings at every stage in one’s life. Whether the reader is young or old, the teachings of the Gita are applicable to him, if he attempts to contemplate on them.

If a reader reads the Bhagavad Gita in a sad frame of mind, his grief will deepen till it transforms into solace. If a reader reads it in an angry frame of mind, his anger will turn into rage and then transform into forgiveness. If one reads the Bhagavad Gita in confusion, he will become further confounded and entangled, until he reaches the root of his confusions and finds understanding. Fir a reader who explores the Gita in a happy and content frame of mind, even enlightenment is possible.

The Bhagavad GIta os like a life guide, and so it keeps appealing to me repeatedly. Each time I read it, I learn something new, I find a deeper meeting. Life feels simplified, and answers become available to me of their own accord. In our age of constant dilemmas and confusions, I recommend the Bhagavad Gita to every seeker who wishes to understand the self and the universe.

PART – 3 DISCUSSION

Do you often re-read books?

I seldom re-read books. Once I am done reading something I don’t usually keep going back to it, unless the book in question is an encyclopedia or a reference book. The Bhagavad Gita that I mentioned earlier is an exception. So, I feel compelled to re-read it. It is very difficult to actually write a book that is interesting for readers to browse through time and again, over and over. Most books do not have such profundity to offer. So, I usually read each book only once.

Which author’s books are best for reading multiple times, according to you?

Some of my friends and acquaintances enjoy re-reading books by Paulo Coelho, Amish Tripathi, and J.K Rowling repeatedly. The Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling and the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho are classic examples of books that people keep reading over and over, from time to time, without getting bored. They claim to learn something new from the works of these authors, just as I manage to gain something new from the Bhagavad Gita every time I read it. There might be some substance to these claims, since I have heard many reliable people endorsing these authors with fervor.

What kinds of books can be read only once?

Thrillers and detective stories can be read only once, in my opinion. The fun of reading thrillers and detective stories is in the mystery. Once the book has been read, the cat is out of the bag and the mystery is solved. Nothing remains to look forward to, once the mystery is solved. If I know already who the murdered is in a thriller, or in a detective story, there remains little more in the novel that can grab my interest. While romance novels and adventure stories can be read multiple times, thrillers and detective stories are one time reads.
