Academic Writing Task 1:-

The graph shows the percentage of males and females who hold each type of qualification in 2005 in NZ. Summarise the information in the charts and make comparisons where appropriate.

Sample Answer:-

The bar chart shows the percentage of males and females who completed various educational qualifications in NZ in 2005.

Nearly 90% of people who completed trade certificates were male compared to a figure of around 10% for females. The reason for this difference is likely to be that skilled trade certificate courses comprise mainly male dominated trades such as plumbing, brick laying and carpentry.

In contrast, diplomas and bachelor’s degrees are more female dominated with 62% and 55% of people completing these qualifications being female. The figures for males are less than 50% (38% and 45%, respectively). This reflects the fact that many females prefer to work in an office environment performing administration or professional based tasks.

For higher qualifications (postgraduate diplomas and master’s or PhD degrees), there are a higher proportion of males (62% and 74%) compared to females (38% and 26%) who completed these degrees. This difference is most likely to be due to the preference of females to focus on families at the expense of higher education.

Dear Principal Simpson,

First of all, I’d like to say thank you very much for the offer to come and address the students at my former school. It would be a privilege for me to give a talk and to see the old place again.

The invitation was quite open regarding the topic of the speech, so I was wondering whether you think it appropriate to talk about my career. As you may know, I have spent a considerable amount of time over the last 12 years travelling as part of my job, and I have had the opportunity to see some amazing places that I think would interest the students.

It would help me to plan my presentation if you could let me know the approximate time that I should expect to be speaking for. If you could also let me know the estimated students numbers, as I will be able to bring a data projector to show some photographs if a large turnout is expected.

I am looking forward to seeing you again and hope my visit will be a success.

Music is played in every society and culture in the world today. Some people believe that music brings only benefits to individuals and societies. Others, however, think that music can have a negative influence on both.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer:-

Generally, music is considered to be one of the most popular and ancient modes of human expression. It features largely in all histories and all cultures and indeed has been one of the main ways of passing on cultural traditions to new generations.

Many people view music as a positive influence for societies. They also believe that the influence on individuals is wholly beneficial as it is a long-established way of communicating and helping us to understand the whole range of human emotion and experience in a more spiritual language than words can represent.

However, there are different kinds of music and the qualities of classical music traditions are not necessarily part of the music many people experience today. In the modern world, there is a huge music industry that sells piped music to supermarkets and advertisers. We are also constantly exposed to loud modern music from people’s CD players, iPods or car radios. So the view of music today as a kind of noise pollution produced by selfish people, is also a common and negative one, but it is difficult to think of a world without music.

Certainly, there is bad music that may have negative influences, particularly on the young. But people’s taste in music tends to change as they get older, and it would be difficult to find someone who had no positive musical associations at all.

In conclusion, I think that music can have both positive and negative influences on people and society, but it is an integral part of human expression that we cannot really separate from our lives.

PART – 1 Intro Part

Yes, Sir. With pleasure, this is my passport.

Where are you from?
I’m from India, presently living in Melbourne.

Do you work or study?
I am doing masters in professional accounting at Deakin University.

Are there a lot of trees where you live?
Yes, my place is surrounded by ample trees.

Do you like dreams?
Yes, I do. Not all of them but a few of them I remember. I also remember some of the dreams that I used to have as a child. I used to have wild imaginations like I had wings attached to my back and I was all out like a bird and flying from one place to another. Funny, isn’t it!

Do you think dreams have meanings?
To some extent, I correlate dreams to our imagination and there’s in fact a strong relation between what you imagine and what you’ve in dreams. I’m not an expert in analysing or studying dreams but my rough assumption suggests me that it’s a pure reflection of what we think day in, day out (= continuously, repeatedly).

Can they be interpreted?
Maybe, ‘Yes’. But an expert would be able to throw some light accurately. Your dreams are your shadows, your shades, your mindset, and your disposition (= temperament). Some dreams come true as well. It’s also believe that many people chase their dreams and they realize them passionately . It’s a detailed study, in fact, and honestly I desired to dig deeper into this subject.

Describe a story or novel you have (recently) read that you found to be particularly interesting.

and explain why you thought it was interesting.

Admittedly, for the past few months, I haven’t been reading as much as I should because of my new projects at work. It’s a shame, because reading is, without a doubt, the best way to learn as well as to relax. The last book that I read, “A still forest pool”, is also the one that has had the most significant impact on me.

Basically, “A still forest pool” is a book about meditation written by Ajahn Chah, a Buddhist master in Thailand. Ajahn had spent years meditating in forest monasteries, which are not as easy to be found as they were several decades ago. Being among the most influential and respected teacher of Buddhism in his own country, he has been known as a man of great wisdom who people seek advice from.

“A still forest pool” is such a remarkable book which reflects the author’s simple yet powerful message about Buddhist practice of “everyday mindfulness”. Not only does it describe the importance of staying fully awake in everyday life, but it also shows people how to start living mindfully. The book has profound insights, especially for the West, where Buddhism has recently become more popular.

This is definitely the most interesting book that I have ever read. It helps me realize how important it is to live fully in the present instead of the past or the future. I would recommend it to everyone who is in search for inspiration, motivation or simply a change in attitude in order to live more meaningfully.

PART – 3 Discussion

Are the any occasions when reading at speed is a useful skill?
Personally, if I’m reading something interesting, I don’t like reading too quickly because I feel that I don’t properly absorb the information. However, it can be useful to skim through things when you don’t really want to read them, or when you just need to find one particular piece of information. For example, I read at speed when I’m checking a household bill or a letter from the bank.

Are there any jobs where people need to read a lot? What are they?
Well, researchers obviously need to read a lot, and I suppose that politicians, journalists and other professionals who need to know about current affairs read a lot too. Having said that, I think most workers read hundreds of emails every week. In my previous job, for example, I had to check internal staff emails at least twice a day.

Do you think that reading novels is more interesting than reading factual books? Why is that?
Both types of book can be equally interesting in my opinion. A good novel can transport you to another world where the characters in the book become almost real. On the other hand, factual books can give you fascinating insights into anything from psychology to ancient history.
