Model Answer

A glance at four indicators of economic and social conditions in four countries, Canada, Japan, Peru and Zaire, in 1994 reflects the great differences that exist between wealthier and poorer nations.

The table shows that Japan and Canada had annual incomes of $15 760 and $11 100 per person, respectively. These figures were overwhelmingly greater than the corresponding figures of $160 in Peru and $130 in Zaire.

Health indicators, too, reflected overall levels of affluence in the four nations. Life expectancy at birth, for example, was higher among the more economically developed countries. Japan reported the highest life expectancy, 78. This was followed by Canada, 76; Peru, 51; and Zaire, 47. This suggests that richer societies are able to put more money into health care than poorer ones.

The amount of calories consumed daily per person roughly followed the same ranking. Canadians each consumed some 3 326 calories per day while the Japanese took 2846 calories. The corresponding figures for Peru and Zaire were 1927 and 1749, respectively.

Literacy rates among adults, too, were higher in wealthier countries, no doubt a reflection of ability to invest in education. Canada and Japan both reported literacy rates of 99%, while Peru claimed 68%. Zaire, the least economically developed of the four countries, had a literacy rate of 34%.

General Writing Task 1

You recently went to a restaurant but think you could have left your credit card behind. Write to the restaurant. In your letter

  • Tell them when you went there
  • Describe where you think you may have left the credit card
  • Explain what you would like the restaurant to do

Sample Answer:-

Dear owner,

Three nights ago, on the 22nd of February, my wife and I came to your restaurant for an evening meal. Our booking was for 7.30 pm under the name of G Ramsay.

However, I believe that I may have left my credit card on the table once we had paid the bill, as I cannot locate it now. I do not remember the exact table number, but it was a table for two near the back wall. I think it may have fallen on the floor as I remember checking the table surface for any items we may have left behind, but I don’t recall seeing it there.

If you have found the card, I would be very grateful if you could dispose of it. I have asked my bank to cancel it already, but for security sake I would be happier knowing it was destroyed. I believe the recommended manner of doing this is to cut the card into 4 pieces.

By the way, the meal was excellent!

With thanks,

S. Williamson

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT)

In many countries, financial crime involving identity theft is increasing. What are the causes of this trend, and what effect does identity theft have on the victims involved?
Give reasons for your answer, and provide ideas and examples from your own experience.

Sample Answer:-

There is no doubt that identity fraud is a great concern, especially in western countries where people are most at risk. I think there are two main causes, and a number of damaging effects.

The major cause is probably the almost universal use of digital technology to store financial data and undertake financial transactions. It is surprisingly easy for criminals to obtain personal information about a possible victim, and then to use this information to impersonate the target. Because bank accounts and loans can be applied for digitally, without the need for face-to-face contact, the criminals are able to apply for financial products remotely, often before the victim is even aware of the attack. The second key cause is, I believe, the increasing probability of ‘traditional’ crimes (such as armed robbery, mugging or burglary) being detected. When criminals see the widespread use of CCTV, DNA profiling and fingerprinting, they are less inclined to indulge in such old-fashioned crimes. Rather, they prefer the lower risk and more profitable use of data-based crimes.

The effects on the unfortunate victims can be quite devastating. Firstly, there is the loss of money from bank accounts or by being connected to a fraudulent loan. In some cases, this can take years for the victim to pay back or resolve with the banks and the authorities. Secondly, there is the damage to their credit rating, which means they may find it impossible to obtain legitimate credit in future. In extreme cases, people’s employment prospects can even be damaged as well, as they find themselves profiled as a financial risk.

Overall, the presence of technology and the decline of ‘traditional’ crimes are the key causes behind this trend. The effects on the victims involve long-term financial hardship in many instances.

IELTS Speaking Full Interview:-

What is your full name?
My name is Arshjeet Kaur.

Can I see your ID?
Of course, yes, here it is.

Where are you from?
I am from Ahmadabad.

Do you work or study?
I work with an IT company.

What is considered a typical food in your state?
Gujarat is primarily a place where you see most people are vegetarian due to the influence of Jain vegetarianism. Many communities, however, do include seafood, chicken, and goat in their diet. The cuisine changes with the seasonal availability of vegetables.

Do parents usually have dinner with their children in your country?
Traditionally, Indians have supper together but I don’t know it seems that culture is under threat for various reasons. If I talk about my family, these days it gets difficult due to different working hours but we do have one meal together. Sometimes dinners are difficult but breakfast is always together. Well, it was about my case but in general, I assume that the same pattern might go. It’s because in the morning there is a high possibility of having food or breakfast together but once you go out from home for your job or study, time files, and it’s difficult to adjust the timing with all.

In your opinion, is it important that parents and children eat together?
Absolutely, I personally feel it’s very important that parents and children eat together as this is an opportunity to learn and share the personal update. It’s more of a quality time spent with your family.

PART – 2 Cue Card

Describe a time when you tried a new food for the first time.
You should say:

  • what food it was
  • where you ate it
  • what it tasted like
  • and explain whether or not you liked this food

Sample Answer:-

Well, I’m a great fan of barbecues and I would like to talk about the first time I tried some typical barbecue food. This happened when I was 10 years old.

My family went out to have dinner to celebrate my younger sister’s birthday. After putting so much thought into some new savoury food to have for our meal, we decided to go to a BBQ restaurant on X street.

We ordered four dishes with three different tastes. One of them which really interested me was grilled-Australian beef, flavoured with something spicy, rich and aromatic. It not only tasted delicious, but also looked appealing. Also, it went well with two kinds of dipping sauces and was served with baguettes. There was also a salad, which gave it a mild taste to contrast with the spicy flavours. The idea of a barbecue originated in America, and for us it was a novel and sophisticated meal.

What I really enjoyed was that we could watch as it was cooked in front of us. I loved how juicy it was and the aroma it had. Just mentioning it makes my mouth water. I mean, the BBQ was out of this world. That was the first time I had tried it, and I would have liked to have kept on coming back for more, but I was just too full.

PART – 3 Discussion

Describe what you think is a healthy diet.
Developing healthy eating habit isn’t as confusing or as restrictive as many people imagine. Personally, a healthy diet is the one which combines enough nutrients for one’s life. Therefore, consuming a rich variety of food is very important because eating a wide assortment of foods helps ensure that you get all of the nutrients, especially the disease-fighting potential that foods offer.

Are there many vegetarians in your country?
Yes, they are. The number of people following vegetarianism has been increasing recently. It is thought that old people or those following a religious, like Buddhism, will be vegetarians; however, youngsters also join to vegetarian community because of many reasons.

Why do you think some people choose to be vegetarians?
People become vegetarians for many reasons, including health, religious convictions, concerns about animal welfare or the use of antibiotics and hormones in livestock, or a desire to eat in a way that avoids excessive use of environmental resources. Some people follow a largely vegetarian diet because they can’t afford to eat meat. Vegetarianism has become more appealing and accessible, thanks to the year-round availability of fresh produce, more vegetarian dining options, and the growing culinary influence of cultures with largely plant-based diets.

How do you think the way we eat will change in the future?
Yes, I do. I think people nowadays pay more attention to healthy food because the awareness of health has been raised among young and old people. Therefore, it will be a remarkable innovation in food consumption in the future.
