Our Part-Time Working Scheme

Our part-time working scheme allows you to reduce your original contracted hours to the number of hours that suit your personal circumstances. These hours can be worked over the 5-day working week or on a certain number of days.

As stipulated in law, part-time workers will get the same treatment for:

– pay rates (including sick pay, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and pay)

– pension opportunities and benefits

– holidays

– training and career development

– selection for promotion and transfer, or for redundancy

– opportunities for career breaks

There are some situations when we don’t have to treat part-time workers in the same way as full-time employees. In these situations we must be able to show there is a good reason to do so – this is called ‘objective justification’. You have the right to get a written statement of reasons for your treatment by us. The request should be in writing and we must write back within 21 days.

You must provide a month’s notice in advance of your wish to reduce your working week. Your annual salary will be pro-rata to the number of contracted hours worked. All terms and conditions will be pro-rata to the number of hours contracted to work. The flexible working hours scheme may apply and flexitime will be pro-rata to the number of hours contracted to work.

In consultation with your line manager, an agreement can be made on what action is taken on the hours that are reduced. For example, you may wish to reduce your hours for a short period of time only and return back to full-time after an agreed period. However, each application will be dealt with individually on its merits and will be subject to management approval and service requirements.

Certain posts will be excluded from part-time working. These are ones that are required for a number of fixed hours per day and are required at a particular time of the day.

Do YOU want to start a business in Australia?

Setting up your own business can be an exciting time. Before you rent or buy premises and start trading, save yourself time and money by going through some planning and formalities.

All good businesses start with a plan. Of course, your plan will change over time, but this initial document will serve as your guide over the next three to five years. A business plan is a written document that describes your business. It covers objectives, strategies, sales, marketing and financial forecasts. It can also help to convince customers, suppliers and potential employees to support you. Banks will require one as well if you try to obtain finance from them.

You will need to choose a business structure. There are four main business structures commonly used by small businesses in Australia. These are a sole trader, a partnership, a trust or a company. When deciding upon a structure for your business, choose the one that best suits your business needs and remember that there are advantages and disadvantages for each. Choosing your business structure is an important decision that can determine the licences you will require in order to operate, so you need to investigate each option carefully.

You must ensure that you have all the right documentation to run a business. You will need to register your business name if it’s different from your own, and this will allow you to trade in multiple states. Ensuring you’re registered for the correct tax is also an essential step to opening your business and this depends on the type of business you’re starting.

Some registrations apply to all businesses and others may be compulsory depending on your business’ size and type. Next, having the correct registrations, licences and permits is fundamental when running your business. They allow you to operate without fear of closure from non-compliance or other legal concerns. Consulting a legal professional can help you understand your legal requirements. Finally, ensure you have all the correct insurance for your type of business. Depending on our business, there will be obligatory insurances and also some that are just advisable to have. They will protect you and your customers.
