T2D Diabetes Support Group

A. The Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) Support Group meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Parker Community Hospital conference room. It is a wonderful opportunity for T2D patients to meet and talk about how they are managing their diabetes. Family members and carers are also welcome. We especially welcome younger family members who may be genetically disposed to the disease, to help them prevent it in the future.

B. Each week, we have a different guest speaker who talks about some aspect of T2D, whether it be medication management, exercise, eye care and the many other aspects of daily life that have to be carefully handled in the face of the disease. Our guest speakers include educators, medical professionals, pharmaceutical reps, optometrists and life coaches. The sessions are always very informative and interesting.

C. First, we have introductory chat time, with tea and coffee served. Then the weekly presentation starts, which usually goes for about half an hour. Question time at the end of the presentation is where some of the most important and relevant information is exchanged. The speakers are keen on hearing about the personal experiences of T2D patients.

D. Present every week is the hospital’s resident dietician, who discusses ways of keeping blood sugar low through diet, the latest information on carbohydrate reduction and ways of avoiding hidden sugars in your diet. Newcomers are presented with a colourful book of diabetes-friendly recipes that the whole family can enjoy eating.

E. After the hospital’s dietician speaks, attendees are free to leave, but it is at this stage that we complete surveys and questionnaires for the multitude of studies on diabetes that are currently being conducted at the hospital, and the associated Parker University. Anyone who wishes to join any of these studies is most welcome.

F. Finally, before you go, we can measure your blood sugar and weigh you if you wish. Many of the attendees like to do this every week so that their diabetes management can be monitored. However, this is not obligatory. So come along to our regular meetings, meet people in the same situation as you, and learn a lot about how to manage your disease and live a normal life.

WHITEBRIDGES ARCHAEOLOGY AND

METAL DETECTING CLUB

This is an amateur archaeology group in Northamptonshire that is part of the Whitebridges Historical Society. The group’s aim is to map out rural fields in the area to record the various ancient settlements on the land. Through the use of metal detecting and excavation we have come up with quite a few Bronze Age finds recently and we have started a dig on the remains of what is believed to be a settlement from around 1,500 BC.

We have unearthed cooking implements, coins, weapons and jewellery, all of which have been donated to the Whitebridges Museum in accordance with the Portable Antiques Scheme. The group is led by Professor Jeremy Glenwood, retired Professor of Archaeology at Cambridge University.

The club was founded in 1993. We hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at the Four in Hand pub in Whitebridges. We offer historical lectures and it is a good opportunity to share information and discuss our finds and future projects. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and a great night out. We are always looking for new members. You can attend two pub nights or day events before you are required to become a member. The club has no restrictions on number of members.

Membership Fees:

£25 per year for adults

Usually on the second Sunday of every month, we have a farm detecting day, where we pick a field on a local farm and completely investigate it with metal detectors. If we have any major finds, we arrange for a more formal excavation on a later day. All are welcome to attend. The next detecting day is next Sunday on the Martindale family farm on Raven Road. The gate will be signposted and we expect to start detecting at 9 a.m. If it is raining, the meeting will be postponed to the following week.

If you would like your land investigated, we offer a free search and recovery service to farmers and landowners. We come to your farm and map it out according to our finds and give a copy to the landowner. We follow government-recognized health and safety procedures and all members have insurance, so it is at no risk to you.
