GENERAL WRITING TASK 1:-

Your friend has just won a sizeable amount of money in the lottery. She would like your advice as to how to spend it.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter,

– congratulate him/her on their win

– give practical advice on how to spend the money

– advise him/her on benefits/drawbacks associated with large wins

SAMPLE ANSWER:-

Dear Anita,

I couldn’t believe it when I got your letter telling me about ‘windfall’! I’m really glad for you and would be pleased to give your advice.

Obviously, as tempting as it is, don’t go blowing the money all at once! I’m sure you’re far too sensible to do something like that but so many previous lottery winners have come unstuck that way. Some even end up bankrupt if you can believe it!

I think you should spend some of the money though on a treat you normally wouldn’t have been able to afford, something like a world cruise or exotic holiday in the Caribbean. Of course, if you want to invite someone along to keep you company, you know who to invite!

Also, you would do well to invest a large proportion of the money. If you invest the money wisely, I would seek professional advice if I were you, you can live off the interest from your investments.

Don’t forget to support any of your favourite animal or people charities. It would be nice to share some of your good fortune with those less fortunate. You will also get a good feel boost at the same time!

On the subject of charities, make sure you don’t fall victim to the many ‘begging letters’ from charities whether recognized or not. Piles of unsolicited mail that tugs at the heart-strings can be overwhelming at first, then just plain annoying at the end, when you find you cannot keep up with them all, either financially or by investing emotional time in them. Make sure your anonymity as a lottery winner is preserved, if at all possible. You have the right to withhold your identity.

Finally, enjoy your winnings! I hope that my advice will be some use.

I look forward to seeing or hearing from you again, very soon.

Love,

Rachel
