You have received an invitation to a friend’s birthday party. You are unable to attend because you will be taking a vacation.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:
– thank him/her and apologize that you will be unable to attend
– explain that you will be away and why
– suggest that you meet when you return and give the friend birthday wishes
SAMPLE ANSWER
Dear T,
Thanks so much for the invitation to your birthday party next Saturday. I got it in the post this morning. I’m really sorry but I won’t be able to come.
I’m going on holidays tomorrow and I’ll be away for two weeks. It’s a shame I’m going to miss it because your birthday parties are always fantastic, but this trip has been booked for ages. I am going to Spain for a long-awaited beach holiday with my family. We usually go in August, but this year we are going in July, so I can’t make my usual appearance!
Let’s meet in a couple of weeks when I get back from holidays. You can fill me in about everything that happened at your party then, and I can show you the latest snaps from my holiday.
Anyway, happy birthday for next weekend and I hope you have a great time at your party. I’ll bring you a birthday present back from Spain.
