You borrowed some books from your school or college library. unfortunately you have to go away to visit a sick relative and cannot return the books in time. write a letter to the library.
Explain what has happened and tell them what you want to do about it to.

I borrowed two books from the library last Monday for preparing a project in connection with my final year exam. I was to have returned them on Friday, but, I am sorry, I could not, owing to reasons stated hereunder.
On Friday morning, I received an urgent call from my sister in Chennai that my brother-in-law had an accident while driving to office. since the accident was somewhat serious, she decided that my father, mother and myself immediately leave for Chennai. We left in a hurry and, as a result, I could not return the books on time. I know that the books are in great demand to the approaching exams, but am sure you would understand. i shall return them next Friday. Bear with me till then.
Although I am willing to pay the fine, please see if you can waive it.
