DRIVER LICENSE IN AUSTRALIA
Getting your driver’s license can feel like a high stakes game—it’s your ticket to freedom, after all. There is a lot riding on passing that driving test, but a few key tips can help maximize the chances of nailing it on the first go.
After scoring your Learner’s Permit, should spend plenty of time behind the wheel, getting to know the car and the road. It’s tempting to rush through the learner’s process to get the holy grail of a license, but take time to gain experience driving in all sorts of conditions: wet weather, low light, busy, multilane freeways, high density; urban streets and roads with hills, dips and curves.

You can rope in a family member or friend for practice time, but don’t rely on them entirely. They may think they’re infallible behind the wheel, but everyone picks up bad habits over time and you don’t want to inherit them. Invest in a professional driving instructor and look out for driver education programs like Keys for Life to get plenty of support and advice. Start slowly on quiet, out-of-the-way streets and build up confidence before you start navigating more complicated aspects like merging onto a freeway, completing three-point turns and driving at night.
After you’ve completed the mandatory number of driving hours required (this varies from state to state) and covered a range of different driving scenarios, you should be in prime position to sit for your driving test.

WHAT’S AUSTRALIA’S WATER SECURITY UNDER FUTURE CLIMATE?
Water security is threatened by a number of factors. These include climate change, rainfall variability, population growth, economic development, and drought. For instance, across southern Australia climate change is projected to decrease winter and spring rainfall by up to 15% by 2030 regardless of whether greenhouse gas emissions are reduced or not.
Rainfall declines are amplified in reduced stream flow and in turn the water in storages. Southwestern Australia has seen stream flow declines of 50% since 1970, while stream flow during the Millennium Drought (1996-2010) in southeastern Australia was half of the long-term average. This ultimately contributes to reduced storage in city water supplies. During the Millennium Drought, for example Melbourne’s water stores declined to a third of full capacity by 2010, when the call for alternative water sources was made. Australia also has naturally highly variable rainfall influenced by events such as El Nino and La Nina. An El Nino was declared in May 2015.

The El Nino’s likely impact will be drier and warmer conditions across inland eastern Australia. Importantly the strength of an El Nino does not always indicate how severely Australia may be affected.
These dryer conditions, should they arise, will place increased pressure on the water supply of affected regions. In particular, increased water demands and reduced stream flows will see declining surface water storage volumes. This could mean we need to develop and use more climate resilient sources. However, the current surface water storage volume for all main cities indicates that our cities can meet their urban water use for a number of years. With surface water alone, Adelaide and Perth can meet their urban use for 1-2 years and south east Queensland for almost nine years.
