IELTS SPEAKING FULL INTERVIEW:-

PART – 1 INTRO PART

What is your full name?

My name is Balraj Partap Singh.

How may I address you?

You may address me as Balraj.

May I see your ID?

Sure, here you go.

What do you think shoes tell about someone’s personality?

I believe shoes are important parts of our life. In the beginning, shoes were designed to protect our feet from uncomfortable surface, cold weather, and sharp objects. With time, shoes have passed from being an item of necessity to an item of luxury. It’s believed that shoes display the class, sophistication and choice of wearer. Therefore, it’s given as much of important as of the clothing sense.

Do you like wear formal or casual shoes?

I prefer both of them depending upon the occasion. For example, when at office, I wear formal shoes because I need to meet my clients and others and wear sophistication matters. During holidays and weekends, the casual shoes play their part.

Do you purchase shows online?

Yes, I do buy shoes online because at times, we get a great deal which you might not get at the physical stores. However, I ensure to buy only branded shoes online because I don’t trust shoes that are of obscure (= not well known) or any new company unless l see them, feel them and walk at the store. For example, if I’ve to buy shoes of Bata or Sketchers, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy them online because I know their fitting, can rely on their quality without feeling them.

Do you think people have too many pairs of shoes?

Certainly. ‘Yes’! Some people are too much fond of having a collection of shoes for different occasions. They’re very particular about their pairs of shoes. Some people have a collection of shoes according to the event and their dressing also.

Do you like to spend money on shoes?

I wouldn’t buy them blindly but when I need them surely I would spend whatever money is required to own a good pair of shoes. I’m not one of those who spend extravagantly after shoes. For casual and running shoes which generally don’t use the original leather, I buy them without giving a thought. But when I’ve to buy formal shoes that use the genuine leather, I will buy them only when a pair of shoes that is being used is not usable any longer because of my incessant love to animals. The formal shoes using genuine leather are made of the skin of animals, and I don’t want to be a participant of the animal cruelty anymore.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe an educational TV program that you have seen.

You should say

– What the program is about/What the program is

– How often you watch this program

– Which segments of people enjoy this program?

– Why is this program educational in your opinion?

SAMPLE ANSWER:-

I enjoy watching informative programs on TV from time to time. My family members are also interested in such shows, so often after dinner we tune into History Channel, Discovery Network channels, or National Geographic shows. We have seen many documentaries on wild animals in their natural habitats all over the world, we have seen videos of rare and endangered species, and learnt a lot about them, and have also seen travel programs that show viewers hill stations, sea shores, deserts, and forests across the world from the comfort of their homes. One of my favourite educational TV programs is Brain Games.

This program is being aired in my country for quite a while now, and I have seen many episodes after work. Essentially the program explores the intricacies of human cognition, psychology, and brain functioning. The anchor poses interesting questions and riddles in each episode, and viewers can try and solve those within a given time frame. Once the time is up, the anchor reveals the correct answers to TV viewers, and explains the logic and science behind them with the help of psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and neuroscientists.

Sometimes the anchor is shown addressing groups of people, giving them a chance to try and solve mind boggling interactive puzzles in different settings. These puzzles are very challenging, and they make me sit at the edge of my sofa, as I diligently try to work them out.

I record these episodes on my TV, and make it a point to watch a few every week, after dinner. I think people of all ages are likely to enjoy Brain Games, and even benefit from the show. However, one needs to be in the right frame of mind to absorb large amounts of information, to truly enjoy the show. It is not possible to put your brain aside and watch this program, like any other sci-fi movie or music channel.

In my opinion, this program is educational because it attempts to unravel the functioning of the human brain, which is a super computer in itself. The highest form of knowledge according to me is self-knowledge, and learning more about how my brain works allows me to look at myself more objectively. It also teaches me way to overcome common cognitive biases, thereby facilitating me in living my life more productively on a day to day basis.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS:

Please compare TV and radio programs. State the differences and similarities, and advantages and disadvantages of both.

TV programs provide audio-visual input simultaneously, while radio programs only provide audio input. Each radio program can last a few hours, while TV programs generally tend to be shorter. TV programs are more engaging because they appeal to two senses at the same time, while radio programs only engage the ears. Radio programs require more attention and focus than TV programs, because the lack of visual input can make it easy for listeners to feel distracted. TVs take up more space, and watching programs requires electricity and a cable or satellite connection, which can be expensive. Radios can run on batteries, and are quite affordable.

What types of TV programs are most popular in India? Why?

Soap operas, talent scouting programs, and reality shows with a lot of drama are very popular in India. There are many such programs constantly being aired on TV, so the easy accessibility to these shows attracts idle and bored people towards them. The element of drama, along with the extravagant costumes and sets makes these shows appear very entertaining and engaging to the masses. Majority of people, not only in India, but everywhere, watch TV to set their brains aside for a while and relax. Such programs don’t require much thought or effort from the viewer; this makes them popular.

How are TV programs in India today different from those that were aired 20-40 years ago?

About 20 years ago, many TV shows used to be more progressive than they are now. Programs generally used to be lighter on the mind, and serials did not completely revolve around scheming, manipulative family members. Stories were more realistic, touched upon more real life issues, and had much lesser drama. There was lesser humbug, and more intelligent comedy. Even slapstick comedy shows were more tasteful. Content was safe for family viewing, and children did not need to be supervised when they were flipping channels. However, we had fewer channels and TV shows to select from, those days, thereby limiting our choices.
