PART – 1 INTRO PART

What is your full name?

My name is Gurpreet Kaur.

How may I address you?

You may address me as Gurpreet.

May I see your ID?

Sure, here you go.

Do you like to watch the sky?
Yes, I am really into watching the sky especially at night to count the millions of stars above. When I was a kid. I remember I sometimes laid down on the grass for hours to watch the shining stars during the summer because I was fond of imaging my favourite folk stories about the stars.

What is the sky like at night in your hometown?
Well, as my hometown is a popular tourist destination and there is not so much industrial pollution, the sky is always clean and clear, and I can see the stunning night sky with the countless and glittering stars and sometimes even the galaxy. But unfortunately in a metropolis like Nanjing light pollution makes the night sky invisible.

Have you ever taken a course about stars?
No, I have never been on any sort of courses about stars because actually there were no such courses in the schools or university. But fortunately my grandmother once sent me an encyclopedia about nature in which there were loads of stories about stars, I got most of my knowledge about the stars from it.

Is it important to study stars?
Yes, I believe that astronomy has always had a significant impact on our world view as it can help us open our eyes, give context to our place in the cosmos and that can definitely reshape how we see the world.

What’s your favourite star?
My favourite star constellation is Orion. It’s very easy to spot on winter nights. Firstly, it has a huge red giant star, which may explode any time soon. Besides, it has a massive blue star which is very young. On top of that it also has a big nebula where new stars are being born – so it has everything!

Do you text someone if he doesn’t answer your phone?
Yes, when my friends can’t answer my call, I will text them to let them know I called and wait for their reply.

Is there any chance when texting someone is better than calling him?
I believe when the person I’m calling is in a conference or in a cinema, it’s better to text him instead of making a telephone call.

Have you ever had difficulty replying?
Yes, I remember when I had to refuse some friends requests I had to think carefully for a long time about how to reply.

How often do you send text messages?
I send text messages almost on a daily basis. I always text my friends and family to say hello, chat and make travelling plans.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe a law about the environment that you would like to see.

You should say

– what the law would be about

– how the law would work

– what effects this law would have (= what changes would result from this law)

– and explain why you would like to see this law in existence or why you think this law is needed.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I was born and raised in Hanoi and have been here for 27 years. I have watched the city develop from a small town and grow into a modern metropolitan area in the new era. With the skyrocketing population of recent years, the city’s environment has become significantly polluted. As a result, I think environmental laws should be enacted immediately to solve this problem.

First of all, Hanoi’s mayor should consider putting more trash bins out in the streets so that people won’t throw rubbish anywhere anytime. In addition, the city police should heavily fine those who are caught littering the streets. By doing so, not only could we save a lot of money on cleaning costs but we could also improve the surrounding public scenery.

Secondly, the city should run a campaign to educate people on how to classify and separate garbage before throwing it out. This is necessary because unsorted garbage contributes to the pollution of underground water and the earth. In my opinion, although these above actions are minor, they would contribute to diminishing the impacts of pollution in our local area if they were done on a collective level.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

Do you think it is the responsibility of governments alone to protect the environment?

Of course not! I think it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment. Sure, the government has the power to enact laws and craft policies but how good is the law if nobody respects it.

We simply could not go on with our lives throwing our wastes irresponsibly and expect the government to just clean it up. There is nothing left to clean up in the first place if only we dispose things properly; it wastes both time and resources.

Do you think large companies and business organizations should be more environmentally friendly? Why? How?

Development is good; sometimes it is a necessity to survive in today’s world. Businesses need profit, but they should not do so at the expense of the environment. Sustainable development is the key, the needs of the present has to be met without compromising the ability of future generations to sustain life in this planet.
