Although different nations have their own customs as well as traditions , my country India has its own unique identity by virtue of its diversity in every sphere and quite famous in every nook and corner of the world for its traditions, rites, arts and achievements. There are several traditions in my country country on the basis of religion. Here I would like to talk about a tradition of Punjab that is prominent among both Hindu and Sikhs.

This tradition is related to month of ‘Sawan’ in English, it is the month of August. In this month, sandhara is presented to the married daughters of the families. In ‘Sandhara’ biscuits made from milk, sugar and wheat are given to daughters by vising their in laws family. Moreover, they are brought home by parents in order to enjoy quality time together. While staying in the house of parents, girls enjoy various activities such as they perform traditional dance, sing songs like ballads, do gossiping, embroidery and other important ventures.

Apart from this, they take pleasure in riding swings that are set up under trees or open courtyard. They wear bangles of divergent colors along with adorn their hands with henna by making beautiful designs. What is more, married girls meet their childhood friends who are also married as whole year they are not able to meet each other. However, this custom offers them a chance to recall their indelible childhood memories.

So, they feel ecstatic and this could be the reason that this tradition is one of the most favorite occasions of girls of my region. Various gifts, clothes and accessories are gifted to them. Even all the family members roll out the red carpet for them. But the sad side is that nowadays it is not celebrated with same enthusiasm as it was celebrated in the past days.

All in all, I would say, this is one of the traditions in my country which is celebrated every year.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

What is the importance of traditional festivals?

I think traditional festivals fulfill three functions. They connect us to our roots, our culture and our origins, giving us a sense of identity. Secondly, they bring families and friends together and lastly, they help us forget about our worries and stress.

What’s the difference between festivals now and in the past?

I think the main difference between festivals now and in the past is the purpose of celebration. Earlier people celebrated festivals for a purpose, but now people have forgotten the meaning behind the festivals. Festivals are only celebrated for joy and merriment.

Do you think western festivals like Christmas are replacing traditional festivals in your country?

Yes, one of the influences of western movies and Hollywood has been the coming of western festivals like Christmas and Halloween. From the past two-three years, even I decorate a tree and ask for gifts from my parents on Christmas. Similarly, in these past few years, I have seen children going for trick or treating on Halloween in my neighborhood.
