PART – 1 INTRO PART

What is your full name?
My name is Anisha Kumari.

How may I address you?
You may call me by my first name Anisha instead of calling by my full name.

May I see your ID?
Sure, here you go.

Where and when do you prefer meeting people?
I prefer meeting people at home, at restaurants, at some shopping mall, or at a movie theatre where we can spend enough time with each other and simultaneously enjoy other activities offered by the place we are at.

How do you greet foreigners?
I greet foreigners by saying hello to them or shaking hands with them, because, I think we should greet people in the way they are used to.

Is there any government or non-government organization that helps visitors or international tourists?
I know about a government organization called ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ that helps international visitors in my country. They help tourists in various ways, like with hotel bookings, sightseeing, providing local guides, facilitating currency exchange, and so on. I really appreciate this idea because by offering support to international visitors we can make their sojourn easier and enjoyable, which encourages them to visit our country again.

Why do you think people choose to be social workers?
I think the feeling of compassion for the less fortunate is the prime motive behind those who opt to become social workers. Those who have a loving heart, and compassion to help other people who are facing difficulties, generally choose to work for the betterment of the society.

What qualities are needed in a good social worker?
The first and the most important quality is compassion. In addition, qualities like hard work, honesty, politeness, courage, communication skills, and motivation are also required in a good social worker.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe an educational TV program that you have seen.

You should say
– What the program is about/What the program is
– How often you watch this program
– Which segments of people enjoy this program

Why is this program educational in your opinion?
I enjoy watching informative programs on TV from time to time. My family members are also interested in such shows, so often after dinner we tune into History Channel, Discovery Network channels, or national geographic shows. We have seen many documentaries on wild animals in their natural habitats all over the world, we have seen videos of rare and endangered species, and learnt a lot about them, and have also seen travel programs that show viewers hill stations, sea shores, deserts, and forests across the world from the comfort of their homes. One of my favorite educational TV programs is Brain Games.

This program is being aired in my country for quite a while now, and I have seen many episodes after work. Essentially the program explores the intricacies of human cognition, psychology, and brain functioning . The anchor poses interesting questions and riddles in each episode, and viewers can try and solve those within a given time frame. Once the time is up, the anchor reveals the correct answers to TV viewers, and explain the logic and science behind them with the help of psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and neuroscientists. Sometimes the anchor is shown addressing groups of people, giving them a chance to try and solve mind boggling interactive puzzle in of my sofa, as I diligently try to work them out.

I record these episodes on my TV, and make it a point to watch a few every week, after dinner. I think people of all ages are likely to enjoy Brain Games, and benefit from the show. However, one needs to be in the right frame of mind to absorb large amounts of information, to truly enjoy the show. It is not possible to put your brain aside and watch this program, like any other scifi movie or music channel.

In my opinion, this program is education because it attempts to unravel the functioning of them human brain, which is a super computer in itself. The highest form of knowledge according to me is self- knowledge, and learning more about how my brains work allows me to look at myself more objectively. It also teaches me way to overcome common cognitive biases, thereby facilitating me in living my life more productively on a day to day basis.

TV programs are more engaging because the appeal to two sense at the same time, while radio program only engage the ears. Radio programs require more attention and focus than TV programs, because the lack of visual input can make it easy for listeners to feel distracted.

TVs take up more space, and watching programs requires electricity and a cable or satellite connection, which can be expensive. Radios can run in batteries, and are quite affordable.

What types of TV programs are most popular in India? Why?
Soap operas, talent scouting programs, and reality shows with a lot of drama are very popular in India. There are many such programs constantly being aired on TV, so the easy accessibility to these shows attracts idle and bored people towards them. The element of drama, along with the extravagant costumes and set makes these shows appear very entertaining and engaging to the masses. Majority of people, not only in India, but everywhere, watch TV to set their brains aside for a while and relax. Such programs don’t require much through or effort from the viewer; this makes them popular.

How are TV programs in India today different from those that were aired 20-40 years ago?
About 20 years ago, many TV shows used to be more progressive than they are now. Programs generally used to be lighter on the mind, and serials did not completely revolve around scheming, manipulative family members. Stories were more realistic, touched upon more real life issues, and had much lesser drama. There was lesser humbug, and more intelligent comedy. Even slapstick comedy shows were more tasteful. Content was safe for family viewing, and children did not need to be supervised when they were flipping channels. However, we had fewer channels and TV shows to select from, those days, thereby limiting our choices.
