How do Indian people feel about birds?

India is a diverse country. Everyone has different feelings. Some love birds, and keep them as pets. Others just admire them flying in the sky. Some even eat birds.

Have you seen many different kinds of birds? (Near your home)

Yes, I have seen many different birds. Apart from the birds I see routinely around my house, I have seen peacocks in my neighbouring village. I have also seen some rare birds, in the Chhattbir zoo. There were different varieties of parrots and the ostrich and emu over there.

Do any birds have any particular significance in India?

For example, does India have a national bird? Yes, peacock is our national bird. It is a beautiful bird. The male looks very beautiful with its plumes spread out.

Do you think birds should be protected? (Why? / Why not? How can they be protected?)

Yes, definitely. They are beautiful creations of nature. They add diversity to our environment. Apart from that, they are the best pollinators. Also, birds eat insects. That is why crops are protected. They are part of our ecological chain. We all know that if any link of our ecological chain is not there, then the whole ecology can collapse.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe a shop that has opened in your hometown

You should say:

• What shop it is

• What it sells (or, what you usually buy there)

• When you first started going to this shop (or, how you came to know about this shop)

And explain why you like (to go to) this shop

SAMPLE ANSWER

Well, a shop that has just opened in my hometown I want to share with you is Tranquil café, which is one of the best book coffee shops in Hanoi. This cafe is decorated in an old, traditional Hanoi style with loads of bookshelves and attracts many foreign tourists.

I still vividly remember the first time I went there 3 months ago, which was also the opening day. That was entirely coincidental. At that time, I came across an article about a new go–to place in Hanoi. As I was so curious about that café, I decided to visit and it caught my eye immediately. That space was so unique with gorgeous paintings and decoration. It really made me feel at home.

As for the reasons why I am fond of this place, I have to say thats because of its warm ambience, which I haven’t found in other cafes yet. You know, Hanoi is a busy and noisy city and I am so exhausted and irritated whenever I travel on the road. Therefore, I often go there as a hideaway to run away from the hustle and bustle. I find it extremely soothing with a cup of coffee and a small book.

And an interesting thing is if I go there on Saturday nights, I can enjoy some soft music played by their staff. I am also pleased that the waiters tend to remember their customers and often give me a small discount. They really know how to retain their customers. For all these reasons, I would say that I’ll still keep going back there in the long run.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

What types of local business are there in your neighbourhood? Are there any restaurants, shops or dentists for example?

Well, I live in a residential area which is more like a combination of a residential and commercial area. So the restaurants, gift shops, dentists, hospitals, electronic shops, grocery shops and so on are just a few steps away from my house. For instance, the block we live in has more than 6 or 7 restaurants and fast food shops. We only need to walk for 2 to 3 minutes to reach the nearest restaurant. The same can be said about other amenities and stores which are also within walking distance.

How do large shopping malls and commercial centres affect small local businesses? Why do you think that is?

Mega shopping malls and large commercial buildings that house a large number of shops and stores at a single place often pose threats to local and small business entities. As they offer shopping experience under the same roof, most of the renowned brands find their place in such a large commercial complex. As a result, shoppers often prefer visiting these mega shopping complexes instead of small shops which are scattered in different parts of a neighbourhood.
