IELTS SPEAKING INTERVIEW

PART – 1 INTRO

What is your name?

My name is Raqwi Washi.

How may I address you?

You may address me as Raqwi.

May I see your ID?

Sure, here it is.

Can you swim?

Yes I can. I learnt at school when I was about 7 years old. Swimming lessons were compulsory at our school, like most schools I think.

Are there many places to swim near you?

Yes, there are a few public swimming pools. There is the main indoor one at a big sports complex in the center of town. There are also a couple of outdoor ones, but you can only use them in summer as it is being too cold in winter. One is a big one in a park, the other is a much smaller one.

Do you think everyone should learn to swim?

Of course, I think it’s very important. Firstly, you spend much of your life on holiday by water, for example, when you go to the beach on holiday, so you won’t be able to enjoy yourself with your friends if you can’t swim. Also, for safety reasons it’s very important. You often hear about sad accidents involving young children so it’s very important.

What do you like to do when you are alone?

I really enjoy being alone in the weekend morning, reading some books and playing computer games. During that time, I can do something I am interested in, and don’t have to think about how to brace for the coming problems.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe an interesting house or apartment you visited

You should say:

– Where this place is

– What it is like

– When you want to live in there

And explain why you want to live in such a place

SAMPLE ANSWER

I have visited many houses and apartments, and I liked most of them. But here, I would like to talk about a house, which I find very interesting. This is the house of my aunt and uncle, who live in Chandigarh. It is a double storey house with four bedrooms, one kitchen, one hall and one drawing room. I find the house very interesting, because the total energy needed to run the house is obtained from solar panels.

They have set up solar panels, which cost them twenty lakhs to set up and now all their electronic equipment, even air conditioners and geysers run on solar panels. They also do not have to worry about power cuts because they are generating their own power from solar panels. Otherwise also that house is very energy efficient. During the daytime there’s so much light from the windows that they do not need to turn on this lights. The house is so well ventilated that they do not need to switch on the fan also at times.

My uncle was telling us that now they have to pay the electricity bill of one thousand rupees per month, whereas earlier it was about 25,000 a month. The maintenance cost of the solar panels is quite less. They have decorated the house with minimalistic approach, and there is no clutter of unnecessary furniture. The woodwork is also very simple, which looks very good and is evergreen. I would definitely like to live in such a house one day.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

How is modern home design (both inside and outside appearance) in your country different to that of the past?

Modern home designs are very different from the past. Earlier we had single storey houses, but now we have multiple storey apartments. Earlier, there was more emphasis on the utility of the house, but today the beauty and utility, both factors are equally considered. Earlier, local materials were used like wood and stone, but today important and prefabricated materials are used.

In your country, what type of home do most people live in?

Most people live in single storey houses, but it is difficult to generalize for the whole of India. In metros such as Bombay, tall buildings have become very common. In the eastern parts of India, where there’s a lot of rainfall, houses have sloped roofs, but in the plains house have flat terraces.

Do people prefer to live on modern homes or the older-style homes?

People prefer to live in the modern homes, because these homes are made with today’s climate in mind. These can accommodate more number of people in less space, which is needed in today’s time.
