PART – 1 INTRO PART

What is your full name?

My name is Amarjit Kaur.

How may I address you?

You may address me as Amarjit.

May I see your ID?

Sure, here you go.

Do you like (to learn about) history?

Yes, I am a big fan of reading historical stories. When I was a little boy, I always took the historical books from my father’s bookshelf and read about historical events. I feel that history not only helps me teach, but also gives me a better understanding of human society.

What historical event do you find most interesting?

Personally I am fond of the Battle of Red Cliffs which happened during the early period of the Three Kingdoms. This was a decisive battle at the end of the Han Dynasty. It was also a typical battle in Chinese history renowned for a smaller and weaker army defeating a larger and stronger foe.

Do you think history is important?

Yes, the main factor is that like our native language and our history forms our cultural identity and provides a unique record of our country. We can learn from the experiences of history to correct our current actions.

Do you like to watch programmes on TV about history?

Yes, I enjoy watching documentaries about history on TV because I can see a lot of materials that cannot be seen in the textbooks. I watch them at home during my time off with my son to learn something about history.

Do you think you can really learn history from films and TV programmes?

I don’t feel that watching current TV series can make you more aware of the history. TV programmes are more engaging than books; however, true historical events in most of the TV series have been distorted by the producers to cater for the audience. It’s really a shame, as young people will misunderstand history as presented by these companies.

Do you think the Internet is a good place to learn about history?

Yes. History is full of debates but you can understand both sides of the story by going online which will help you to become aware of the true facts and be able to think critically about these things. I’m always Goggling for interesting historical materials about the Song Dynasty. I want to know the truth of the matter.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe a practical skill that you have

You should say:

• What this skill is

• How you learned it

• When you use this skill

• And explain how this skill is useful to you

SAMPLE ANSWER

Well one skill that I have is playing the guitar. I learned it when I was young. I learned how to play because I had many friends that played the guitar and when they played and sang, I knew I just had to learn. At first it was a little difficult because to be quite frank, I really didn’t see myself as someone who was musically I inclined. I had to tell myself that I could do it and little by little, a note here and a chord I there, I managed to pick it up.

Even now I have a long way to go with playing but I have found it enjoyable not just for myself, for others have said they enjoy it as well. I have had a few guitars and although there are different styles and qualities, to me it seems that as long as they have strings on them and you can tune them they are fine.

I use the guitar to cheer myself up when I am feeling a little down and also use it to teach songs to others. I have never made money teaching guitar but I have made a little money playing and singing. I don’t know if I would want to pursue this skill as a career but as long as I still enjoy it, I am going to do it.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

What skills and abilities do people most want to have today? Why?

It all depends on what kinds of career one would want to pursue and what types of skills and abilities are in demand in the job market. But, as evidence suggests, people want to learn skills like computer programming skills, good communication skills, project management skills, multi-tasking abilities, technical skills and good time management skills. They want to learn them primarily because the job market has become extremely competitive today where just mastering a particular subject or trade, in which one would want to pursue his/her career, is not enough.

Which skills should children learn at school? Are there any skills which they should learn at home? What are they?

Children should learn any skills, be it at schools or homes, which would help them become good and productive citizens. These skills may include proper communication skills and good time management skills, in addition to other soft skills, as they would help children, no matter what professions they choose in the future.

However, having said that, it is also important that children are encouraged to learn mostly those skills, in addition to their regular subjects and trades, which are more aligned with their future career aspirations. Besides, parents should try to instill good moral qualities among their children at home and teach them to be helpful and sympathetic to all creatures- small or big.

Which skills do you think will be important in the future? Why?

I think that technical skills and computer skills will prove out to be more and more important in the future because people would be relying lesser and lesser on manual works and skills and depending more and more on machines, computers or robots. Therefore, it is fair to assume that only those skills, which are needed to collaborate with machines and train them, will be important. However, I also feel that soft skills like communication skills, interpersonal skills, project management skills, multi-tasking skills and time managed skills would also be important no matter what the professions are in the future.
