Goal is a dream with a time limit. So, someone might have a dream of becoming a singer but when that person says, I am going to be a singer in next one year, it is then that it becomes a goal.

Can goals help to change your life? How?

Goals certainly shape our lives. It is our goals that decide on what kind of decisions that we will take, the risks that we take, the people that we meet and the life that we choose to live. So, a painter will go out on exhibitions, make changes in life that suit the profession and meet like minded people.

How are plans and goals related?

Plans are tend to be more short sighted but goals have a little more time span. So, you might have the plan to go out on a weekend but goals are something more specific. Also, goals are something that are more personal with plans including lot of people.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe a TV or radio presenter.

You should say:

– who is s/he

– what programme s/he presents

– how s/he presents the program

– and explain why you like / dislike him/ her.

SAMPLE ANSWERS

The one name that hits me when thinking about presenters is of Oprah Winfrey. I think she has been one of the best and the most successful anchors of our times. Her show “The Oprah Winfrey Show” has been the highest rated television program of all times. It was on top 1 for around 25 years and it does need some talent to pull that off.

IELTS Speaking Interview

The reason I liked the show and its entertainer was because it was not just about having a talk and letting people relax over a cup of tea. The show told people inspiring stories, featured book clubs, had self-improvement segments, and philanthropic forays into world events. It was not just about making money but more of using the powerful tool of media into something good.

The reason Oprah was successful was because when she says with expressions. In her talk shows, it feels as if two friends are sharing a story over a cup of tea and we get to listen to it. The emotional connect that she is able to make, I think makes her and her show amazing.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

Do you think TV programmes depict what is actually happening in society?

Some TV programmes depict what actually happens in a society. For example, documentaries, shows, dramas display what actually happens in society in a creative way. But then there are fictional shows that are based on the imagination of the writer.

What is the significance of TV programmes in your country?

There is plenty of good content on TV. If we watch it strategically we can learn several things from it. For example, one can learn about a new language or culture from a TV programme. If children watch some good shows they can learn different moral values. On the other hand, students can learn current affairs, news, sports, etc. for educational purposes.

Do you think people’s preference for TV programmes changes with age?

I think people’s preference for TV programmes changes with age. While children love to watch colourful visuals, teenagers love to watch dramas full of romance with a dash of mystery. As they grow they taste switches from drama to family-based dramas. They also prefer to watch news channels and documentaries.

IELTS Speaking Interview

Do you think people watch TV programmes for entertainment or education purposes?

I think generally people watch TV programs for entertainment. They usually use TV programmes as a medium to escape from the reality of the world and relax for a while. While everyone is busy with their lifestyle then they need a time when they can relax. People use tv programmes for the same purpose. There are only a few people who watch TV for educational purposes. They watch news channels, documentaries, etc for it.
