Can you ask question to the examiner? 

The answer to the above question is yes! You can freely ask a question if you don’t hear of the question or when the question is and clear to you.  

In this article, we will precisely tell you how to ask the examiner to repeat the question in which you are doubtful.

Let’s first have a look on the IELTS speaking criteria: 

IELTS Speaking contains 3 parts. 

Part 1 – Introduction 

Part 2 – Cue Card 

Part 3 – Follow Ups 

In all three parts you need to speak with in the different parameters. Proper pronunciation, fluency, grammatical structures, including lexical resource. All these are judged by the examiner so for that purpose you need to be an excellent speaker who can lead conversation with the examiner.

Questioning in IELTS Speaking Part 1

You are not allow to ask them to change the question if you’re not able to answer the previous one. On the other hand, you can just ask them to repeat it for the second time when the question is and clear to you. You can use sentences like(Could you repeat that please?). Examiners for too bounded with the time limits that they don’t have enough time to make a Health to explain the question to you. Examiner is not allowed to explain the questions in the words.

Questioning in IELTS Speaking Part 2

You are not allowed to ask the question in this part. Moreover, you were also prohibited to change the question. You just need to talk about the topic which is given to you by the examiner and represent it as a worthy topic.

If you are unable to understand the word given in the topic, the examiner can’t help you. By your own  you need to understand the topic and need to deliver it for the two minutes. You can add excess information in order to expand or to increase the length of your cue topic. You just need to follow the statement given and the prompts that are given for the better representation with the sequencing of the topic.

In the section examiner will tell you when to start and when to stop your topic.

Questioning in IELTS Speaking Part 3

You’re allowed to ask the examiner to repeat the question statement along with the words which are unclear to you. Along with this, if you are not able to understand the meaning, you can ask the examiner to rephrase the question statement. This can make a great help in order to deliver your answer accurately. 

One can freely ask the question as like the part 1 and part 3 also.

Which questions you can ask?

  • Could you explain that, please? (the examiner will rephrase the question)
  •   What do you mean exactly? (the examiner will rephrase the question)
  •   Could you explain what X means, please? (for a specific word)
  •   What does X mean? (for a specific word)

Don’t ask the examiner the following questions

  • Have you been there?
  • What do you think?
  • Where do you come from?
  • Do you agree with me?
  • Can you change the question?
  • Can you give me an example?
  • Can you give me a different topic?
  • What are your opinions?

Additional Tip

Most of the time it is seen that follow-up section questions are lengthy ones. Sometimes students after hearing the question directly, it cannot thing what they actually want to deliver in their answer. For this, they require some thinking time so you can use the phrases that can help you to think about the question further.

You can use the statement like: “It’s an interesting question. I’ve never really thought about it before. I suppose…” You could use that method for difficult questions in part 3. 

Does your scores are affected if you ask them to repeat?

No, as you’re speaking is assessed on various para metres such as pronunciation, lexical resources, grammatical range and accuracy and fluency. It’s needless to say that your IELTS speaking won’t get affected by repetition because understanding and comprehension is not calculated. Under this module, you can ask the examiner to repeat as you are the one who is going to answer, so for better delivering of the answer, you can freely ask the examiner to repeat the question. 

Note that repetition of question must be asked in the formal as well as with the polite way
