The pie charts illustrate the working patterns of Australian employees and owners/managers by indicating the percentage of them who worked full-time, part-time, or overtime.

Australia had an 8.8-million-strong workforce in 2001, among which the vast majority were hired as employees (6.9 million) and the remaining 1.9 million either owners or managers. Only 29% of Australian employees had a full-time working week of 35-40 hours. 386 of them were working on a part-time basis for less than 35 hours per week, while a third had long working hours of 41 a week or more.

When it comes to owners or managers, interestingly, two thirds of them had long-hour working weeks while only about one fifth could have a regular working day. Part time working, as can be expected, was relatively rare among owners/managers (only 14%).
Observing the overall workforce does not lead to any surprises as it simply combines the above two, with about two thirds of all workers working full-time or long hours, and the remaining one third working part-time.

To sum up, working overtime was over two times more common among owners/ managers than among employees.

You feel that the streets around your neighborhood are too dirty and have too much rubbish. Write a letter to the local council, in your letter, you should:

Say who you are
Explain the problem and its effects on your life
Give suggestions on how to solve the problem

Dear Sir,

My name is Johnson Smith and I am a local resident in this neighborhood. Recently, I found that the streets near my house are so dirty, so I write this letter to you and hope that you could solve the problem as soon as possible.

Recently, several homeless people have come to this community and they throw rubbish wherever they go. Therefore, the streets are in a mess, which makes the inhabitants around very uncomfortable. In fact, the waste in the streets stinks all day round and it makes air quality increasingly worse. Additionally, dustmen are supposed to clean the streets but they never show up. What is worse, someone even slipped and got injured due to the rubbish in the street.

Thus, I suggest that your council take effective measures to solve the problem. Could you please enact strict regulations on the management of homeless people? Or could you send dustmen regularly to sweep the streets in the neighborhood? Or maybe you have better ways to make the streets clean.

There are many different types of music today. Is the traditional music of a country more important than the International music that is heard everywhere nowadays?

The distinction between “traditional” and “modern” music is essentially meaningless as music is a continuing tradition that cannot be neatly divided into two simple categories. Traditional music is usually defined as music from long ago that contains historic and cultural information and it is commonly believed that modern music does not possess these characteristics and will not possess them in future. In this essay the differences of what is commonly called traditional and modern music will be discussed.

Typically, when we think of traditional music we think of classical music or music that has its origins in ancient cultures. Cultures change over time and this music is familiar to us because it is part of our roots but different because culture changes. It is a reminder of how people thought and behaved in the past and particularly what was important to people at that time and therefore resonates with us in the present. However, much of the music of past times has disappeared out of common knowledge and what remains tends to be only the finest examples of music from past periods. This can give the incorrect impression that music of the past is superior to what is produced today.

Modern music is often viewed as containing little aesthetic or historic value. However, much of modern music will disappear leaving only a small number of pieces that will be considered reflective of the current time. It is extremely difficult to predict which pieces will survive but possible examples include Ruby Tuesday by the Rolling Stones which tells of a young woman, whose freedoms were never enjoyed by previous generations and I Don’t Like Monday’s by the Boom town Rats that tells of the terrible consequences of America’s gun culture.

In summary, the distinction between classical and modern music is a hazy one and of little importance. Music is a significant part of our culture and is part of a living history that continues in an unbroken line.

Well, you may call me Daljinder instead of calling by my full name.

Are you working or student?
I am a student as I have recently completed my senior secondary education..

Let’s talk about Introductory Part
Your introductory part will be based upon “Weather”

What’s the weather like where you live?
Well, I was born and grew up in a tropical country, so it’s pretty much hot and humid year round. However, in Northern cities, we actually enjoy four distinct seasons. In summery months, it can get really sweltering, and by contrast, temperatures can really dip in winter.

What type of weather do you like best?
I’d consider myself a cold weather person. I love the crisp mornings at the end of fall and the chill of winter. Maybe it’s because we have to bundle up as the weather turns cold, and I love wearing sweaters and overcoats.

Does the weather ever affect what you do?
You know, I gotta say yes, especially when it rains. I mean, I cannot go out and run my errands if it’s pouring outside. The roads get really slippery, so it’s quite dangerous to drive. Besides, you will definitely be soaked if you do decide to go out.

Does it rain a lot in your hometown?
Well, it depends on the season. In winter and spring, there is a dearth of rain associated with the arid weather. In contrast, it is usually raining cats and dogs in summer and august, causing loads of troubles for people travelling on the road.

Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?
Yeah, of course. Traffic is often held up when it rains. All the roads are clogged, and people find it difficult to escape from traffic congestion. I would stay at home and watch TV rather than going out and being caught up in traffic.

Have you ever been to any island?
Yes, I have! Actually, I lived on an island for 3 months back in 2016. My mother was offered to work at a resort for 2 years, so I joined them there for 3 months. Island life was quite an interesting experience!

Are there any islands in your country?
Yes, there are. There is one famous island called X, famed for its crystal clear water and white sands. I’ve heard the pagodas are very interesting to visit there, as well. I haven’t been yet, but I dream of going there for a girls getaway (when women go on a trip together) sometime in the future.

Do you want to live on an island if you have a chance?
Not really. Islands are beautiful, but I felt really isolated (separated from others) when I lived on one before. As I’m an active person, I felt there wasn’t much to do. Sure, the beach is great, but it gets boring day after day.

What do you like to do when you are on an island?
Beach of course! Behind that, I like getting to know the local culture and food. I especially enjoy drinking coconut water fresh off the palm trees and trying local fish recipes. Moreover, I enjoy getting hair braided (hairstyle) by local people.

When it comes to talking about my friends, I’d like to talk about Bess. She is my best friend. We are the same age and she is only two days older than me. We studied in the same school, so we had many opportunities to communicate with each other. She is a good looking and outgoing person. We have many of the same hobbies. We both like reading books and watching films, then we exchange our own opinions about the books and films. We had many fun times together. She is good at cooking. Every time I went to her home, she would cook many tasty dishes for me. She likes to research all kinds of cookbooks and cook programs, while I don’t like to cook at all. She is patient to play with kids and help them. She takes part in a charity organization; she regularly goes to the disabled children school to read all kinds of fairy tale books to children. I feel proud of her. Although both of us are pretty busy with our jobs, we still meet each other once in a while. Whenever I am in trouble or in hardship, she is always there with a helping hand and encouraging words. I do appreciate having this friend.

PART – 3 Discussion

What do you think makes someone a good friend to a whole family?
A good person with better interpersonal skill, benevolent nature, amiable behaviors and humorous character can become a really good friend to a whole family. From my experience, I can say that such person has really good communication and interpersonal skills and that’s why they can become close to all family members regardless of their ages.

Do you think we meet different kinds of friends at different stages of our lives? In what ways are these types of friend different?
Yes, it is quite true. The type of friends we have in different stages of life greatly varies. In childhood, we make friends who live near us or study with us. The number of friends is quite high in childhood and they are mostly our playmates. We make comparatively fewer friends in schools and the preference is mostly based on common interests. In university level, we make many friends but the number starts reducing with the age. In old age, we have comparatively fewer friends but most of them are very close.

How easy is it to make friends with people from a different age group?
It is not that easy to make friends from different age groups in most of the cases. The age barrier sometimes brings issues that might ruin the friendship. The friendship among people of different age groups in adult age is common especially when people start their own career but this is comparatively fewer among students who mostly prefer to make friends of their age.

Do you think it is possible to be friends with someone if you never meet them in person?
Yes, it is quite possible and in fact, I have 3-4 friends from different countries whom I have never met. The pen friend is an old trend and making online friends is a comparatively recent trend. Though in most cases the friendship is not that strong, there are exceptions.

Is this real friendship?
Definitely, this type of friendship has every sort of bonding and characteristics that a real-life friendship has except the fact that they do not meet in person. The online and pen friends can share almost anything with each other, communicate frequently, exchange gifts, wish good luck each other, have common interests and topics to talk about, care for each other and share happiness and sadness. I would say true online or distance friendship is possible even though they do not see each other in person.

What kind of influence can friends have on our lives?
That’s a nice question indeed. I do believe that we can learn about a person from the company he keeps. In other words, we can define someone from the characteristics his/ her friends have. From this regards, it is true that friends have enormous influences on our life. They can make our life worth living, they can influence us to become a better or worse person and they can make differences in a person’s life.

How important would you say it is to have friends from different cultures?
It is quite important in my opinion. Having friends from different cultures gives us an excellent opportunity to learn about the cultural diversity. It broadens our perspective and let us experience things and activities which would have otherwise impossible.
