The bar graph shows the expenditure of different income groups in Italian, Indian and Chinese restaurants in Australia, while the scatterplot shows the number of annual visits per person to the same type of restaurants between 1965 and 2015.

The proportion of money spent on Chinese and Italian food is similar for high ($42 and $20), medium ($35 and $14) and low ($13 and $8) income groups. As people’s income becomes higher, the proportion of money that is spent on Indian food drops from being the most to least favoured style of food. This suggests that Indian food is preferred because it is the least expensive option.

In 1970 the total number of restaurant visits per year was approximately 5 visits per person, which was made up of 3 and 2 visits per person to Chinese and Italian restaurants, respectively. The total remained low until 1985, but after that time increased steadily to around 50 visits per year by 2015. After 1985, the number of visits to Chinese restaurants increased in a continuous upward trend reaching 22 visits per person per year by 2015, while visits to Italian and Indian restaurants initially followed a similar trend but the number of visits began to level out after the year 2000 reaching 15 and 12 visits per person per year by 2015, respectively. People having higher disposable incomes and less free time are probably the causes of the dramatic change in eating habits.

General Writing Task 1

You have been offered a job overseas that you applied for. Write a letter to your friend who already knows about that job as well

  • tell what kind of job is it
  • explain why you applied for this job
  • ask your friend about the country

Sample Answer:-

Dear Elaine,

Hope this letter finds you in radiant health and the best of spirits. I applied for a job in Barklay’s Bank in Leeds and have received their job offer. I heard that you have also worked in the same bank last year.

My job is in their insurance section. It mainly involves meeting people and convincing them of our insurance policies. It also has a lot of field work. I have done an MBA in finance and my resume was very impressive. That is why, perhaps, I got the job. The pay package is also very good.

I applied for this job because I have good communication skills and I love meeting people. The field work involved in this job would help me in developing my network. Ultimately, I would love to open my own company and this experience would help me a lot.

Do tell me something about the country and the people there. What sort of weather I shall have to face and what sort of accommodation I should look for.

Do convey my regards to your parents. Hoping to hear from you soon!

Yours lovingly,

Kiran

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT)

Some people think that all children should learn geography in school. However, some others think that it is more important to learn subjects that are more relevant to life. What is your opinion?

Sample Answer:- 8 BAND

With constant modifications to the school curriculum and constant changes in society, the question of whether to maintain or drop geography is an interesting topic. I believe there would be severe consequences if geography were to disappear, mainly due to the understanding and open-mindedness that is derived from such studies.

Firstly, with evermore complex geopolitical strategies being played out, it can be considered extremely valuable to be able to identify the locations of these events without checking on a map. Religious and border conflicts are among the most common sources of news events, and a lack of knowledge as to where these events are taking place can be considered ignorance. For example, areas such as the Middle East are constantly in the news.

Therefore, by being merely aware of their location in the world, readers or viewers can greatly increase their understanding of the conflict.

Secondly, making geography compulsory in schools would most likely encourage students to travel later in life. This is because geography can bring to light options you may not have known existed previously. For example, historically England has been the top destination to learn English. However, in recent times students have learned about more economical options such as Malta or Ireland. Therefore, without a sound geographical knowledge of Europe, these options could have been overlooked.

To conclude, removing geography from the school curriculum would reduce a student’s ability to fully assimilate global events in the media. Furthermore, removing the subject could indirectly reduce the number of perceived options available to students.

IELTS Speaking Full Interview:-

PART – 1 Intro Part

What is your full name?
My name is Ishani garg.

How may I address you?
Well, you may call me Ishani instead of addressing by my full name.

What is the name of your home town?
I am a dweller of rural area names as Kokri Kalan..

How many hours do you sleep a day?
Since I work from sun up to sun down (all day long), it’s essential (very important) for me to get a healthy amount of sleep. I usually go to bed between 10:30 and 11pm and get up between 4:30 and 5am. To be honest, I always set my alarm for 4:30 but I have a habit of pressing the snooze button (the button you press when your alarm goes off and you want to sleep more; usually lasts 5-10 minutes) 2 or 3 times so usually end up getting out of bed closer to 5.

Do you think it is enough? Why?
I think the minimum amount of sleep to be healthy is 6 hours a night. So yes, I do sleep an acceptable amount of hours. But, to be honest, I think it’s unnatural to get up before the sunrise; I think we need natural light. Although I sleep about 6 hours, I still feel sleepy throughout the day. I think getting up at 6 would feel a lot more refreshing.

What do you do to improve sleeping quality?
With all the stressors that I face throughout the day, it’s important to take some deep breaths at the end of the day. I downloaded a meditation app called HeadSpace a few months ago and have started doing some meditation before sleep. Furthermore, I try to avoid looking at my phone at least 30 minutes before bed because it stimulates my mind too much. I truly believe that meditation leads to a much more restful sleep.

Do you like sleeping during the day? Why?
When I take a nap, I tend to keep pressing the snooze button and end up (do something without wanting or trying to) sleeping for at least an hour and a half! Although it feels amazing to escape the heat with an afternoon nap in an air conditioned room, I try to avoid it because I end up feeling more tired afterwards. I think a 30-45 minute nap would be ideal.

Do you think elderly people need more or less sleep than young? Why?
I imagine that an aging body exerts (use) much more energy for simple tasks that seem easy to a young, able body. Furthermore, they may be more sensitive to extreme weather. With this said, I would say that the elderly require more rest. I believe if they have more rest, they can keep healthier and perhaps live a longer life.

Do you like shoes?
Yes, of course! I’m quite a girly girl (very feminine), so I’ve always been into shoes since I was a little girl. My mother used to catch me trying on her high heels in her closet! Moreover, I’m a fashionista (a person who likes fashion) so I feel that shoes really tie the whole outfit together.

How often do you buy shoes?
Mm I would say every couple months. I’m trying to save up for a new car right now, so I don’t like to spend too much unnecessary money. With this said, I usually buy a new pair at the start of every season.

Do you like to wear shoes that are comfortable or good looking?
Definitely good looking, hopefully comfortable too! I care much more about the appearance and if they complement my outfit. However, I try to buy nicer brands so that more comfortable should be expected. Moreover, many comfortable shoes are often unattractive, like Crocs for example.

What is your favourite type of shoes?
High heels 100%! I feel that they really tie the whole outfit together. Moreover, I feel feminine when I wear them, not to mention that they accentuate my legs. I have spent several years getting used to them so I can now strut my stuff (walk confidently) in heels everywhere I go!

Why do some people have too many shoes?
Well, there could be various reasons. I think one is that perhaps they see shoes on sale so they buy them on a whim (buying something without thinking about it), even if they don’t need them. Moreover, some people are really into shoes so they like to collect them. Lastly, maybe they keep their old shoes so their collection keeps growing.

Have you ever bought shoes online?
Of course, although I don’t prefer it. I have only bought shoes online from familiar stores, like Aldo and Zara, which I know fit me well. On the other hand, I don’t like to buy shoes from new stores when I’m not able to try them on first.

Are people willing to buy expensive shoes?
Some people! I think people who are wealthy are more apt to (likely to) buy expensive brands. On the other hand, there are some people who would rather have a few quality items rather than a bunch of cheap quality pairs. So, I think this type of person often tends to buy more expensive shoes also.

PART – 2 Cue Card

Describe a cafe you like or dislike
You should say:

  • Where it was
  • When you went there
  • What you ate or drank
  • And explain why you liked or disliked the cafè.

Band 8 Sample Answer:-

The fast pace of modern life in the city can be too much for an introvert like myself and I sometimes desire some time to retire into my shell and take a little retreat. Fortunately, I found the perfect place called “Secret garden” which I am going to share with you right now.

“Secret garden” is a garden themed coffee shop located on the rooftop of a building in the centre of Hanoi. The café is well-known for its floral and botanical inspired design, which gives you a sense of peace and tranquillity while enjoying some cake and coffee at the same time.

I have become a frequent guest there and usually go on the weekend. My favourite activities in this coffee shop are reading books while listening to relaxing instrumental music, having a warm cup of tea with cookies or simply just sitting in the exterior garden and enjoying the view.

Despite being popular, the coffee shop’s still able to manage a quiet and soft atmosphere. The setting is perfect with relaxing music, and the staff are really well-trained and cater to the guests’ needs quite well. Also, other guests there are usually really quite respectful and generally don’t disturb other people by talking or laughing too loudly.

It’s rare to find a place like this in Hanoi and I always recommend it to my friends who need a break from the busy city life.

PART – 3 Two Way Discussion

Why do people go to coffee houses?
Well, as you know, there are more and more people in coffee shops now a days and there are several reasons for this. The first reason I can think of is coffee shops provide convenience on your leisure time. For instance, you don’t have to clean the house before someone comes to visit, just go to a coffee shop and enjoy with no pressure. Another reason for that is you can pass the time in a coffee shop, as long as you drink the coffee you can stay as long as you want. There are no waitresses rushing you off so that they can seat someone else. Also, the couches are comfy and the coffee is usually good. Take me as an example, I usually go to the coffee shop when meeting my friends, I won’t get bored and I can enjoy myself while waiting.

What are the differences between cafes and restaurants?
I have to say that, the difference between a cafe and a restaurant is usually not very distinct. First of all,  a cafe generally offers a light, casual environment, wherein you can stay outside, sip on beverages and eat lunch or snacks. Here’s an example, most coffee shop in China has cozy environment usually situated in a discreet location where people can sit, eat, drink and chat with each other. As opposed to a restaurant, it is a dining establishment that usually offers much more varied service, a formal environment, and is designed around the idea of the ‘meal’, usually dinner. Such as Taco bell, it is a famous restaurant where they serve huge meals from breakfast to dinner course.

Do Chinese people like to drink coffee?
Well, I would say yes, but probably not as much as the many Westerners crowing about the ever-increasing number of Starbucks. This is for the fact that, most traditional Chinese folks prefer drinking tea as it is healthier, it cleanses our internal organs and has more health benefits than coffee. As a matter of fact, in most Chinese restaurants, they serve tea as a complimentary drink. On the other hand, there are also Chinese people who love coffee as it seems to be addictive and can make their mood better. An example for that is my father, he cannot start his day without drinking coffee because it gives him energy and positive mood whenever he drinks it.

Do Chinese people like social activities?
We cannot deny that people in China love to partake in a wide range of Chinese sports, games, and leisure activities, which you can observe during a stroll in the park or at traditional festivals or competitions. The first point here is that Chinese people like to spend their free time outdoors as much as possible. For instance, parents will take their children outside. You will find Chinese parks full of people, both young and old, from dawn to dusk, engaging in various Chinese sports and leisure activities. Another point here is that Chinese people are very sociable and would rather spend time with others than alone. The activities they enjoy in their free time also usually involve some movement, keeping them more active and healthier than many of their Western counterparts. Common examples of these activities are having a family picnic, a family outing on the beach, or a club party.
