Will it be better to have a single language for the whole world? Discuss its advantages and disadvantages.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Our planet earth is divided into numerous countries, each having its own languages. But in this modern age of globalization, it seems to be an attractive proposition to demolish the barriers of languages, and have one single language – say English – for the whole world. A single global language, however, has not only its advantages, but disadvantages also.
One universal language, no doubt, will have its advantages. People from diverse ends of the globe will be able to communicate without any hindrance. World leaders, at their meetings, would not need translators to convey their thoughts. Authors would not have to get their books translated – translations that are never faithful representations of the original contents. So knowledge will flow freely across the international borders. Common language will promote understanding of one another’s culture. That would lead to universal love and brotherhood, and drastically reduce the chances of conflicts among nations.
But in single global language has its flip side too. The biggest drawback is that it will play havoc with ethnic cultures which comprise the age-old customs, traditions, literature, fine arts like music, dances, etc. One single global language would stifle the local languages, thus destroying the ethnic cultures. Culture, needless to say, is the life and blood of an ethnic group. It defines the identity of the regional people. I also fee; that local languages and cultures and too deep rooted to be destroyed. They will hold their own against the onslaughts of the global language.
To sum up, it is not feasible to have a single language across the globe. Regional languages are too strong to be snuffed out. The best thing is that the two should exist side-by-side.
