Aquariums and wildlife sanctuaries are seen as sources of education, entertainment and lifesaving researches. However, confining animals in this way is being criticized.
Discuss some of the arguments for and the against the maintenance of zoos.

To some people, aquariums and zoo provide information and entertainment in addition to being sources of life saving research. However, there are people who argue that confining animals in the place which is not its natural habitat is cruel. This essay analyzes the perception of both sides of the issue.
The main argument in the favour of aquariums, wildlife sanctuaries and zoos is that they are good sources of education and entertainment; people get a chance to look at wild animals and understand their life. Furthermore, a zoo enables veterinaries to conduct research on animals disease. For instance, now several bacteria and viruses cause diseases such as bird flu and swine flu to animals ate affecting human beings. In addition to that, aquariums and zoos can help wild animals facing extinction.
The conflicting argument is that since animals and birds are living beings, they are most happy in their natural habitat. For example, an elephant will live for 120 years in the forest but in captivity it lives less than fifty years. Moreover, in the age of technology there are other ways to learn about animal life, journalist and scientist do painstaking research on this subject, and consequently excellent study material are available on television channels like National Geographic, Discovery and Animal planet. Another argument I that when millions of people exposed to hunger poverty, starvation and malnutrition, spending resources to feed animals by keeping them in captivity is unjustifiable, especially as their natural habitat are most suited to them.
In summary, keeping animals in captivity is a violation of animal rights. However, the educational and entertainment aspects of zoos and aquariums justify the existence of such institute.
