IELTS WRITING TASK 2 (AC + GT)

Some people think placing advertisements in schools is a great resource for public schools that need additionally funding, but others think it exploits children by treating them as a captive audience for corporate sponsors.

Choose which position you most agree with and discuss why you chose that position. Support your point of view with details from your own experiences, observations or reading.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Advertisements in schools are nothing new but nowadays schools are seeking corporate sponsors to fund just about everything. In my view, teens are vulnerable and persuade the parents into buying what they are seeing, so, companies are targeting teens and younger ages to build brand recognition. Schools should not be selling children as a captive audience for corporate sponsors. In this essay, I will support my view point with valid examples.

Product advertisements can appear on school walls, book covers, athletic scoreboards or on billboards. Schools have become an attractive alternative for companies or brands pitching their wares. To fund their in-school activities and equipment, schools needs additional funding so they have started looking at corporate dollars.

A school is a place where children develop their eating habits and learn about the importance of proper nutrition but on the same school wall, they are exposed to junk food advertisements. Isn’t it wrong on the part of the school? I am personally against such practices. Schools should be all about teaching students to make their own choices, not coercing them to buy things they don’t need.

School should refrain themselves from selling students as a consumer. Junk food advertisements influence children to eat bad foods. Other ads persuade children to look or act in a certain way and placing such ads in school premises is morally wrong. In a survey, it has been found that many parents worry that placing advertisements in schools adversely affects the quality of education.

To conclude, schools should look for alternative revenue streams. Also make kids aware about bad products so if they come across something that is unsettling or persuading, they know to think for themselves.
