IELTS WRITNG TASK 2

In some countries it is compulsory to learn another language at school. In other countries, students are free to choose their own subjects. How far do you agree with either of these systems?

I believe that it is important to learn languages and students should be encouraged to study them, but I do not agree that it is something that should be forced upon them by the education system. These days, finding a place at university can be very competitive and is usually reliant on a student’s final marks at high school. Making all students study languages puts the people who are not naturally good at learning languages at a distinct disadvantage when they could have performed better in another subject.

The younger you learn a language the better you are it, so perhaps this is part of the reasoning behind the argument for obliging students to study languages. The same however, could be said for learning to play a musical instrument or play tennis, yet neither of those skills is obligatory. Some young people have enormous difficulty studying languages despite their age and they should not have to suffer through learning them if it is not completely necessary.

On the other hand, perhaps English is an exception. Now the world lingua franca, I suppose it could be said that a working knowledge of English at work and online is just as important as having a solid background in mathematics. In the future, all university courses may very likely be conducted solely in English, and as a result the compulsory study of English at school would certainly be justified.

As the education system already has huge control over what it is studied at school, adding the compulsory study of languages to this would actually be restricting what a student can learn, rather than enlarging upon it. It must be remembered that there is a limit to the number of subjects that can be studied. Until students are not able to function normally in the world without an additional language, the obligatory learning of them should not be enforced. In conclusion, though studying languages is an important part of education, I do not believe it should be something that students have to do as a rule.
