People are advised by doctors and governments to exercise regularly. Why exercise is considered so important? What are some ways that people could be encouraged to exercise more?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Doctors and governments encourage people to do regular exercise because it is a way to keep the population more healthy. Regular exercise, such as walking for twenty minutes every day, has been shown to improve the health of people no matter what their age. It improves the circulation, helps control weight and improves mood.

If people continue to do regular exercise even as they age it helps them to live longer and lead healthier lives. Keeping moving makes people continue to have good balance and flexibility and this is important to stop people from getting stiff bodies or falling over and breaking bones. If a person continues to exercise, they won’t have problems getting up from chairs or in and out of cars.

The saying goes, ‘use it or lose it’ and this can be particularly said for muscle mass. If people stop exercising as they get older their muscles start to waste away. This is one of the reasons older people start to have problems with walking and keeping up their strength. Regular exercise is also good for retaining bone density, which normally tends to reduce with age.

These facts alone should be enough to encourage people to exercise more. However, in this busy world it can be difficult to find the time to exercise. A good way to encourage people to exercise might be for the population to have access to free fitness centres, in the same way as many countries have free health services. Government fitness centres would be just like gyms, but open to anyone who wished to participate.

If people started using them regularly, there would be enormous savings in healthcare as the population would become healthier. Another way to encourage more exercise would be to offer tax breaks to people who exercised regularly. If people wished to participate, their level of exercise could be measured by fitness bracelets. The more exercise they did, the less tax they would pay!
