It has been said, ”Not everything that is contained in books.”Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. Which is better? Why?
SAMPLE ANSWER
The acquisition of knowledge or education takes place from various sources such as family, formal educational institutions and one’s own experience. One source of knowledge cannot be a substitute for another, because each has its own unique advantages. Learning from books and learning from experience are compared here to evaluate their merits and a preference made.
On the one hand, knowledge gained from books is central to a person’s ultimate success. Reading books is necessary to get factual information. For example, every branch of knowledge has its theoretical and practical aspects. Books take us into the world of ideas, emotions, thoughts and expressions, in addition to helping us improve our style of written and spoken language. Besides, they inspire us and offer us an opportunity to learn from other people’s mistakes.
In contrast, however, it is said that we do not forget what we learn by doing. Even though people learn the same things, some people become smarter than others in practicing them because of experience. As an example, instead of reading about the different types of music, one has to practice music in order to become a good musician. Again, reading the biographies of Olympic swimmers alone will not make a great swimmer. Students of medicine or law at the most prestigious universities need the knowledge gained from experience to succeed in their professions.
An analysis of the matter pints to the conclusion that learning from all available sources is beneficial to individuals. Books and experience provide people with different ways of learning and they are mutually dependent. When books provide theoretical knowledge, experience gives practical abilities.
