Some people say that driving personal vehicles on city roads should be made prohibitively expensive so that everyone uses public transport. Other say that everyone uses public. Other say such a measure will restrict freedom of choice and will affect industries and employment.
Discuss both these view and give your opinion

Millions of people who find it challenging to commute within big cities, and an even greater number who suffer from various life-threatening diseases because of breathing in the toxic city air, would be delighted if one day, all the personal vehicles that clog our cities vanished by some magic They believe governments should make maintaining personal vehicles in cities economically unviable by imposing hefty taxes and parking fees. However, on the other side, there are many who believe that such a move goes against a basic pillar of democracy, namely, personal freedom. They also point out that such an action will damage the automobile industry and’ in turn, result in a huge loss of jobs. In this brief essay, I am going to deliberate on both the views and try to reach a conclusion.
Let me focus on the contrary view first. Freedom of choice is indeed a basic tenet of democracy and it should not be tampered with under normal circumstances. It is also true that in many developed and developing countries like my own – that is India – car manufacturers directly employ millions of people and contribute to the sustenance of many more like drivers, automobile mechanics, and so on. So, it is true that any coercive action to limit the use of automobiles will lead to large- scale unemployment.

On the other hand, minimizing personal vehicles in cities and making public transport both affordable and efficient will reduce traffic jams, accidents, and most importantly, pollution which has reached an alarming level in cities ranging from New Delhi to Beijing. If we go by the experience of several successful cities like Tokyo, London, or New York, where even ministers and millionaires travel by the metro, we can see that such an approach is economically viable as well. It is possible because the Mass Rapid Transit System, popularly known as MRTS, is both capital and labour-intensive. Construction and maintenance of the MRTS involve billions of man- hours of new jobs and it will surely off-set the possible job losses in the automobile industry.
Therefore, in my opinion, it is imperative that personal vehicles are restricted in our cities immediately. Public health and concern for the quality of life should always outweigh dubious economic arguments. And at the end of the day, the quality of life of the masses is more valuable than individual freedom.
