WRITING TASK 2 (AC + GT)

The big cities are constantly growing. Why is this happening, and what problems does it bring? What can be done to improve people’s lives?

SAMPLE ANSWER

The phenomenal growth of cities the world over is a unique situation experienced by humanity from the days of the industrial revolution. These days, the unplanned growth of cities in the developing world is confronting mankind as a serious threat. This essay examines some reasons for the enlargement of cities, the problems associated with this development and solutions to the problems created by it.

The main reasons for the growth of cities is* the migration of large number of people from villages in search of job opportunities and better amenities. The arrival of about five-hundred people each hour in the Indian city of Bombay is a good example. As cities are centers of art, commerce, education, fashion and trade, they attract people of all types providing them with livelihood.

As a result of this exodus, issues of accommodation, education, healthcare and transport become some of the big problems in cities. Only people having lucrative business and jobs can get decent facilities in metros and cosmopolitan cities. Many people end up living in slums which become the fertile soil for crimes.

As remedial measures, improving conditions of life of villagers is one key solution to the problems caused by urbanization. Delocalization of business and industry is another. For example, the problem of centralization can be addressed by developing small townships around big cities. Deliberate and priority based actions by statutory bodies to improve law and order, educational and health care facilities and transport can make life in cities more tolerable than it is now.

Briefly, cities are growing rapidly everywhere. Although they fulfil the aspirations of millions, overcrowding can create problems. By careful planning, prioritizing and scheduling these issues can be solved reasonably well.
