The charts give information about the amount of exports (millions of tonnes) moving through Rotterdam port in Holland to various global destinations in 2002 and 2012; and also the % rates of tax imposed on these exports by the receiving countries.
Write a report summarizing the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:-
The tables show us the quantity of exports being transported through Rotterdam over a ten year period, and the level of taxation imposed on the goods at destination.
Regarding the volumes, total exports increased slightly, reaching 18,600 million tonnes by 2012. Within this total, however, most zones declined in volume. For example, Europe – the largest destination- declined from 6,900 million to 6,400 million, and the USA- the second highest- went down by roughly 10% to 3,900 million. China dipped slightly to 2,300 million, and Latin America dropped from 1,800 to 1,500 million. The ‘other’ zones remained static at 350 million. By marked contrast, volumes to Asia Pacific and Australasia more than trebled, hitting 2,550 and 2,300 million tonnes respectively.
Turning to taxation, we see that tax increased considerably in all the zones that showed a decline in volumes, reaching 2% in the USA, China and Latin America, and rising from 5% to 8% in Europe. The ‘other’ zones kept tax stable at 2%, while the growth zones reduced tax massively, from 5% to 2% in Asia Pacific and a four fold decrease to 1% in Australasia.
In summary, the decade showed a clear connection between increased export volumes and reduced levels of tax.

Dear Bill,
Hope you’re keeping well and the kids are fine. Thanks for asking me to come to the cinema, but I’m going to have to pass I’m afraid – I have already arranged to catch up with a few people from the place I used to work. My old boss is retiring, so it’d be good to catch up with him before he leaves.
How long will you have? We can arrange another night or why don’t you come along to the part I’m going to? I’m sure you’ll have a good time, and I think you’ve already met a few of the people at that Christmas party a few years ago. It probably won’t go on too late, so we could perhaps go somewhere afterwards?
If you’re keen, I can pick you up at the station and you can spend the night with us at our place -it’ll be like old times!

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-
Tourism is always a force for good which enables people of different countries to understand each other.” To what extent do you agree with this idea?
You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Sample Answer:-
The role of tourism in the world today is widely debated, with some people claiming that it is indeed a force for international understanding. However, I personally do not entirely accept this, and I will explain why in this essay.
Firstly, we must consider the potential negatives of contact between cultures. For example, when western tourists visit untouched parts of the world, their stay causes pollution for local societies. We see this in the litter left at Machu Picchu in Peru, and in the damage to ecology caused by safari tourism in Africa. Furthermore, there are numerous examples of tension between tourists and local cultures, ranging from drunken British tourists in Europe to American ‘spring breakers’ in Canadian or Latin American resorts. In these cases, tourism actually leads to resentment and distrust between nationalities, not better understanding.
A further reason to be wary of this idea is the economic aspect. It Is sometimes said that tourism improves international relations because it encourages the flow of money from wealthy to less developed countries. In reality, however, the wealth generated usually stays in the hands of private companies or local officials, and rarely drips down into the population. Many of us have Visited less developed nations as tourists, and have witnessed at first hand the poverty that exists outside the confines of the resort hotels. We leave with the impression that our stay has contributed nothing to the lives of those we have observed.
This is not to say that tourism is entirely bad, of course. There are benefits in terms of improving local infrastructure such as roads and airports. But to say that it is ‘always a force for good is to ignore the various problems it causes.

My name is Akashdeep Singh.

Where are you from?
I’m from India, presently living in Singapore.
Do you work or study?
I am doing Masters in Fashion Designing at Deakin University.
Do you like birds?
Well, I take a very keen interest in nature, so I love to learn about different species of plants, animal kingdom, and yes, birds. They are truly fascinating creatures and they come in all shapes and sizes. Bird watching is one of my favorite things to do.
Have you seen many kinds of birds?
Well, living in the city, birds are a rare sight. Most of the stuff about birds that I’ve seen is on documentaries of the great outdoors. I mean, I’ve seen some common breeds in real life like pigeons and such, but nothing too exotic.
How do people in your country feel about birds?
Overall, they are not very into birds. Only elderly people are fond of keeping birds. Most of people only like to eat them especially game birds like pheasants. People in remote areas often hunt for birds in the wild and roast them over an open fire. They are considered a delicacy where Il come from.
Have you seen many different kinds of birds?
I have only seen a few, I am not much of a bird watcher The ones I have seen are pretty common, like pigeons and sparrows. I haven’t sighted any exotic breeds.
What will you bring when you go out?
Well, you know, there are certainly some items that l’d consider essentials whenever I go out. For example, a pair of headphones to listen to music when I’m on the move. It really makes my daily commute less boring.
Did you ever forget to bring things?
Well, I gotta admit l am quite a forgetful person. There have certainly been times when l’ve left the house without my keys, my phone or even worse, my wallet. It’s really a nuisance finding out that you have no cash on hand when you want to pay for, like, a coffee or something.
Will you bring different things in the daytime or at night?
I guess I do bring different items at different times of day. Like, for example, in the morning when it’s really sunny, a pair of shades might come in handy so I always bring that. By contrast, at night when it can get a bit cold, it’s quite useful to have a light jacket to brace yourself against the chill.

Describe one of your childhood toys that was special to you.

Sample Answer:-
I have many toys in my childhood and at different stages, I prefer different toys. However, among them, a Teddy bear is the most special one to me and I still keep it at my closet until now.
I guess that all kids love a furry friend and so did I. However, what made the bear really special to me was that this was a gift from my father on an occasion of my 5th birthday. Everything about it was so different from other stuffed bears. At that time, my father was working far away and I missed him so much. I thought that he could not come back to celebrate my birthday party as he had did before. To my surprise, on my birthday, he suddenly came home and brought with him a lovely Teddy bear. Missing him, I ran into him and my father gave me big hug, then kissed me. I was so excited about the Teddy bear. When I squeezed it, it said I LOVE YOU by the most sweet and lovely voice on Earth.
Looking at it made me immediately think about my beloved father. His physical presence on my birthday was like gold to me. You know, it is really hard to not have one of the most important people to you in your birthday. I would never forget that special moment and the Teddy bear means so much to me.

What should be considered when buying toys for children?
I reckon one important thing to think about is the age of the child. If a child is only a couple of years old, you shouldn’t give them toys which contain small parts that could be swallowed and cause the child to choke. Another thing to consider is whether the toy will continue to entertain the child for a certain period of time. What I mean is, if the toy will only interest a child for 5 minutes, it isn’t really worth buying. It’s better to choose something that they will enjoy for months or years.
How have toys changed compared to the past?
I guess the main change is in electronic toys or battery operated toys. In the past, people used to only give simple toys to their children that were often handmade. Nowadays, people prefer mass produced toys that are the recent trend. Those types of toys are often exciting electronic toys, such as computer games. Another difference is that toys decades ago were often so simple that children had to use their imagination and creativity to find enjoyment in using them. think today’s toys stimulate less creativity in children on the whole.
Why do parents buy a lot of toys for their children?
I guess Some parents are materialistic. They think that if they buy many toys for their kids, they are being a good parent. Another reason is that children have short attention spans which means that some parents buy toys to keep their child quiet and out of their way. But I think the main reason is probably the power of advertising and peer pressure which drive children to want more toys and pushes parents to buy them.
Is it good for children to play with toys?
Yes, I think so. Some toys that can be bought are educational and are very important for early learning. Educational toys provide a great way for children to develop skills, such as spatial awareness, motor skills, and hand-eye coordination. Furthermore, toys can give children a safe way to explore the world and learn about colours, shapes, and textures. However, I must admit that some toys for older children, such as computer games, can become addictive and, at that point, those types of toys are not beneficial.
