Academic Writing Task 1:-

Charts 1 and 2 below show the proportion of income spent on different areas by young people in Canada and Poland. Chart 3 shows the average age of certain life events for these countries and estimated global average age.
Write a report summarising the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer:-

The charts show the percentage of youth income spent on various areas in Poland and Canada, and also three key life events by age compared to an estimated global norm.

Looking firstly at income, we see that in Canada the 2 highest areas of expense are leisure and clothing, at 20% and 19% respectively. The other areas (housing, food, transport and studies) are all roughly similar, at between 14% to 16%.

In Poland, however, studies take almost half the expenditure at 43%, followed by transport at 26%. Leisure and clothing are similar at 10% and 11%, and housing/food are the same at 5%.

Regarding life events, we see that, in Poland, leaving home and buying a car happen at an age close to the predicted global norm of around 26 years, whereas in Canada they happen much earlier at 20 years or just under. Getting married, by contrast, is similar in both countries at around 30 years, which is much later than the world average of just over 20.

In summary, young people’s expenditure in Canada is more evenly split than Poland, where transport and studies take the vast majority. Poland is closer to the global average than Canada in terms of life events.

General Writing Task 1:-

You recently ordered an item that was advertised as having a discount from the normal price, but you have found that when you paid, you did not get the discount. Write to the company. In your letter

Explain that you did not get the discount
Tell them where you saw the discount advertised
Tell them what you would like them to do about the situation

Sample Answer:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing with some concern about an item I recently purchased from your company. It was a new digital camera from the Nokia range, model number SL452. The item was ordered using your telephone ordering system and I read my credit card number to the sales person on the other end of the line.

I was persuaded to buy the item based on a 20% reduction that was advertised, but I was surprised to find that when my credit card statement arrived, I was charged the full price. I saw the reduced price offer in our local newspaper, in which your company had taken a full page advertisement with all items on the page discounted.

I am very satisfied with the camera itself, and do not wish to return it, but I would like the advertised 20% of the cost of the item refunded to my credit card. If this is not possible, then I would regretfully send the item back as I can obtain it for a cheaper price in other stores.

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-

Many people today are worried about young children using video games. What problems might these games cause, for children and society as a whole? How could these problems be reduced?
You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Sample Answer:-

The almost universal availability of video games among children has presented us with a number of challenges and decisions, none of which are straightforward. I believe there are three main problems associated with these products, and also three remedies we can adopt.

Perhaps the major problem we need to deal with is the level of violence found in these games. Many of them feature aggressive or warlike characters, ranging from soldiers to criminals and killers. This inevitably leads children to believe that such behaviour is normal, or even desirable. A second issue is the obsessive way that some children use the games – for example, preferring their computers to real friendships, making these children isolated and socially naïve. Finally, there are physical effects from excessive gaming, including eye strain, insomnia and damage to posture. These can be difficult to reverse once they have taken hold.

Turning to possible solutions, one key step would be to legislate more strictly to control the content of these games. They could, for instance, be reviewed by censors in the same way that films are. This would prevent unsuitable material influencing young minds. To tackle the problem of obsessive use, we could make more counselling and advice available through schools. On the subject of physical side effects, advice on safe use could be included as part of the packaging or even the game itself, so that youngsters are constantly aware of the risks.

To sum up, this is a problem that has both social and physical effects, and the solution will require combined action by manufacturers, schools and authorities.

My mother likes to play the game of chess, and sometimes I also give her company. Initially, I didn’t like chess much but after playing for some time, I started liking it.

There is no doubt that online source is essential for everyone nowadays. A vast amount of information is instantly updated every second to meet our needs. For me, in particular, I’d like to check the website called food.com almost everyday.

What I love about the website is a wide variation of food stores is introduced in detail, including the price, the food available, the parking area and the service offered. Posts can also be varied in terms of food, by which the reviewer recommends their top five stores selling it; in terms of design concepts, by which people can choose their favorite surrounding environment or those young photographers can also come to practice and in terms of specific locations. Of course different person has different taste, I also can to go through the comments below or save many posts for references. What is more, the website provides delivery service, which is a huge benefit for those who are living too far away from the store.

For those reasons listed, food.com is definitely one of the websites I’d love to visit daily.

PART – 3 Follow Ups

Which websites are popular among your generation?
I think that websites with information about how to do things are really trendy, for example, recipes and how to make certain dishes or how to make clothes with tutorials to follow. People are finding new hobbies through looking at websites and learning how to develop new skills.

Is using the internet a social or solitary activity?
In my opinion, I think that it depends on what you are doing, for instance, if you are at university and working on a group project, then you may have to work with your peers to find information. However, for most people it is a solitary experience, working with your desktop, tablet or phone to find out whatever information you are looking for.

How has the internet changed social behaviour?
Before the internet people interacted much more when meeting up and going out together, now you see people glued to their phone screens. Their focus is on their social media apps looking at what their friends and family are doing through photos and status updates, rather than actually talking to them. Communication is mostly through social media, with instant chat cutting the need for face to face meetings.

Should companies check job applicants’ online profiles?
It’s not unreasonable for employers to do this, however, I think that what people share online may not be the whole picture of how they behave at work. For example, seeing photographs of a person on a night out with friends acting silly, does not mean that they will act like that in the workplace. It can give the employer a wider sense of the persons personality and interests so that they can see if they really are who they say they are.

What will be the next big development online?
In my view, I think that more and more people will be able to work online from home in the future. Companies will make it easier for employees to take work home with them, giving them a hard drive or a company modified super tablet, with everything they need to work productively from anywhere. It has already happened with many companies, including Apple and Amazon. It makes sense that this trend will continue and we will see more of it.
