Whenever you appear for your IELTS exams,the writing module would require you to perform according to two writing tasks: TASK 1 and TASK 2. Although it is not very hard to write these but not having a proper understanding of these tasks can make you lose your chance of scoring good. This article would focus on the writing Task 1 and it discusses in detail that how can you perform well in the type which is referred to as ‘MAPS’.

Basically , in this type of task 1 , you will get a picture which can have one or two maps, based upon the question. For this type of question you have to describe the map in your own words.

‌TYPES OF MAPS: Let’s have a look on the different types of map questions that you can face in your exam :

 1) Describe one map in the present day.

2) Describe two maps-one in present and one and past.

3) Describe two maps- one in the present and one in the future.

The first kind is very rare and there are very less chances that it will be a part of your exam but the other two types of map questions are common and probably you can get one of them if you get a map question in your final examination. In the first type, you mostly used the simple present tense and passive sentences. In the second type, you will use present as well as past tenses where as in the third one you will use the present and the future tenses along with the models of possibility.

‌THE QUESTION: The question you will normally be shown a picture of two or one map and according to the picture you have to report and summarise the main features which are visible. You can also talk about the general changes that you cannotess apart from that we need to tell the locations and directions of some places in the map. Also this is a man made process therefore we will also make use of passive sentences.

‌STRUCTURE: When talking about the structure of your task 1 maps basically you will follow the same pattern and write four paragraphs in total:

Paragraph 1 – Paraphrasing

In the first paragraph you will just paraphrase the question statement in your own words and write it down.

Paragraph 2 – Overview

In the second paragraph of overview you will write the general statement. This means that you need to describe the general changes that you can see . Apart from that you have to give an overall statement for both of the pictures that are included in your map. For instance, if you can see that some restaurants or cafes are being added into a place ,you will write an overall statement that there was an introduction of some eating facilities.

Paragraph 3 – Main body 1

Your third paragraph will be your first main body paragraph. In this you will right some of the changes which you can see. In the body paragraph, you have to explain the changes properly along with their specific locations and directions.

Paragraph 4 – Main body 2

Next in your last paragraph you will write about some other changes which you can see. You can compare the two maps which you have. Apart from that, you can also make relevant comparisons among the different features that are provided to you in your picture.

‌VOCABULARY:

Given below is sum of the vocabulary and language that you can utilise whenever you are going to write your IELTS writing task 1 of the type maps.

1. WRITING ABOUT BUILDINGS – If you are going to write the features of some of the buildings that you have in the map, you can use words like demolished, knocked-down, renovated, built, replaced, developed, constructed, reconstructed, expanded, relocated, converted and modernised.

Some of the examples are:

‌The government demolished the theatre and developed a civil hospital.

‌ They removed the cafe and replaced it with a library.

‌ They converted the book store into a large auditorium.

‌ The store was modernised into a supermarket area.

2. WRITING ABOUT TREES AND FORESTS – in the case of forest and trees you can write cut-down, cleared, chopped-down, planted and removed.

For example:

‌The forest was cleared to construct a residential area.

‌ Several rose of flowers were planted at the edge of the road.
