Number of students get puzzled related to the word count in the IELTS writing examination. This happens because number of sources has provided wrong information on the various websites.

In addition, there is also a misconception that you can write your task above 200 words in order to achieve high band scores or in IELTS writing task 1 you need to write more than 200 words to achieve a high band score.

Let’s precisely clear with the below mentioned word, count rules, related in IELTS.

  • Whether a word is big or small for example articles and deposition counted in your essay.
  • Words, including hyphen in them and also count it, but considered one word. 
  • Date, time and numbers are also counted in the words. To cite an example, there were 5000 people present in the auditorium at 6:30 pm on 25.12.2019.” has 12 words, where ‘5000’, ‘6:30 pm’ and ’25.12.2019’ are considered as three different words too.
  • Symbols or not counted along with the words like as of %. For example-the % sign in 89%
  • Compound nouns are calculated as like other words for example, skyscraper, grasshopper but all of them are counted as a single word.
  • Compound nouns which are written separately are counted as single words for example, dressing room.
  • Debts, written as like 16 September will be counted as single word and a single number not as a single word.
  • All the words written in the bracket are also counted. It’s needless to say that if your word is repeated, for example, the is repeated in every sentence then it will also be counted as many times it is written in your text. 
  • Contractions are counted as the single words, whereas the words like “I am or It is” are counted as the double words or to separate words.

Talking about the word limit, it is recommended that you write 150-180 words for Task 1 and 250-280 words for Task 2.
