MAIN BODY PARAGRAPH IN IELTS WRITING TEST

Body paragraphs play paramount role in IELTS writing, this is where you can gain most of the points by explaining the ideas which are relevant and lead and lead to attain excellent scores at the parameter of task response. This is where you can explain main content according to the statement. You can write body paragraphs as per your ideas, each essay type has its own structure but they have similar body paragraphs. So, the body paragraphs plays a vital role in enhancing your scores and today we will talk about main body paragraph in IELTS writing test.

There are certain points that can help you to write body paragraphs properly:-

1. Start your body paragraph with addressing line which indicates the type of essay which you are going to write, it will be the first line of the paragraph.

2. By using a phrase “First and foremost” or “first tenable etiology” you can give your first main idea as per statement.

3. Then explain main idea by keeping in mind “How” and “Why” I wrote this idea. You can explicate your points in 2-3 sentences.

4. You can use almost 3 to 4 grammatical structures in explanation as per the demand of the statement such as “As/since”, neither/nor, not only…but also, either ….or, if ….then, when …. Then.   

5. After explaining main idea give relevant example “you can devote real life example or survey to support your idea.

6. To sum up your idea by giving result you can use connectors such as Therefore, Therby, and Thence. It can be in single sentence.

Now let’s discuss some common mistakes that can mislead your body paragraph

1. Not separating the paragraphs properly. You should leave a line between the paragraphs so that the examiner can identify where the paragraph ends and new begins.

2. Trying to cover more than one main point also reduce the scores. You should raise only one main topic in one paragraph which should be supported by supporting points and an example. This will help reader to know and understand your view easily.

3. Some students don’t write the topic sentence at the start of the paragraph. 

4. Another common error is not interrelating the sentences in a proper way. Sometimes the sentences don’t go in a flow or one in the first sentence you talk about one thing and in the second you straight away start talking about something else.  

5. Use of discourse markers such as ‘for example’, ‘for instance’ or ‘such as’ to introduce examples or ‘however’, although’ or ‘though’ is necessary to demonstrate contradiction

6. Writing irrelevant content is another thing that can reduce the scores. You should give the supporting point and example which is relevant to the main point.  Sometimes the information given in the paragraph does not relate to the main view of the paragraph and so is pointless. 

7. Writing a good supporting point is necessary if you are aiming 7 or more bands in IELTS writing but some students don’t have enough to support their main point. This definitely reduces the scores.

8. Planning is mandatory to make your essay well organized and structured. Planning also give you the path to proceed in a proper manner. It also helps you to write equally in both body paragraph 1 and 2. It also helps to save time as your vision is clear that what will you write first and what will follow it.
