Mistakes are the fact of life. It is the response to error that counts. Also students do mistakes in IELTS test hence, they lose their band scores. Mistakes are part of any exam, but a student can easily overcome them if he/she identifies the mistakes on time and start working to improve them. Similar is the case with IELTS Exam. Most students repeat the common mistakes in the IELTS test and regret them at a later stage. Nevertheless, be extra careful about these common mistakes in IELTS Test because even missing the required score by 0.5 bands can cost your study. So let’s we shed some light on Common mistakes in IELTS that reduce your scores.

1. Spelling errors and poor vocabulary

The four sections of IELTS should be accurate in terms of vocabulary and spelling. Applicants making spelling errors in IELTS papers often score a low band. You should write the words on your notebook every day. Moreover you should read various kinds of books, newspapers novels to grasp the vocabulary. If you face any kind of difficulties while finding the exact meaning of words than you should search about that and try to use on daily basis.

2. Time management

Time management is very crucial in the IELTS exam. The whole IELTS test lasts for 2 hrs and 45 minutes with the IELTS Reading, IELTS Listening and IELTS Writing  have to be done in one sitting—in 2 and  a half hours. Since there is no negative marking on the IELTS it is better to attempt all questions. Firstly, attempt to those questions which are easy to find than move to the difficult ones. It helps to utilize your time. In listening and reading, after each section, you get a little time to prepare for the next section. Use this time wisely. And in the Writing section, two tasks have to be completed. Task 1 is either letter writing or a graph description and Task 2 is an essay. You have to spend 20 minutes on task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.

3. Mispronunciation

The most important element in pronunciation is that you should be easily understood by the person speaking to you. Many candidates follow the British or American accent. They believe that if they pronounce the words in accent than they will get a higher band. This is not a correct notion. Copying a native accent is not important however correct pronunciation is essential. So, work on speaking clearly and naturally.

4. Blank answers

In the IELTS Listening module, there isn’t any sort of negative marking for answers that are left blank. Hence, if you don’t know the answer, you can make a guess. There are two reasons for doing this –

You don’t lose points if the response is left blank in the IELTS Listening test. If you leave a blank space, you might write the right answer in the wrong place later on. This may get you into trouble.

5. Lack of focus

Most of the candidates lose their concentration in listening and reading modules because sometime they feel bore in these modules. You should build a habit of listening the English songs, movies, podcasts to maintain their focus in listening. It also helps to understand the accent.

And meditation is also the tool for candidates for promoting the concentration. Apart from this, applicants also lose their focus in reading just because of lacking of interest. Some student find it too boring module. So how to make it interesting? Sometimes the information we read is not presented in a way that is aligned with our personal interests. So it’s too hard to find out the answer. By reading the presenting information on you tube in a lectures, videos you can maintain their interest. Because on these sites same information presented with different way or in easy language.

6. Cover All the Key Points mentioned in the Task

Task response matter a lot in IELTS test. You should explain all the points clearly which you mentioned above. Make sure your idea is relevant to the topic. Because it is equally important to cover all the points which you going to mention in task.
