Common Mistakes in ielts Writing Task
In IELTS writing test most of the test takers are unable to score 7 or more. It mainly because of task 2 as aspirants fails to respond the statement or sometime don’t able to make essay a well structured. So today we will talk about some mistakes committed by the test takers in IELTS writing task 2.
1: Not appropriate number of paragraphs: It is a very common mistake as some students make excess paragraphs and others goes on writing in a single paragraph. Paragraphing comes under the Coherence and cohesion which holds 25% of your scores. First of all let’s see how paragraph affects your scores.
Band 8 | for paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately |
Band 7 | presents a clear central topic within each paragraph |
Band 6 | uses paragraphing, but not always logically |
Band 5 | may not write in paragraphs, or paragraphing may be inadequate |
Things to remember:-
– Don’t make paragraph of one or two sentences.
– Make new paragraph for each idea
– Make sure to present a clear central topic in each paragraph.
2: Incorrect format
Writing Task 2 should be written in proper format breaking it into paragraphs according to your idea. This structure is easy to understand as your every view becomes clear.
Structure of essay should be :
– Introduction
– Body paragraphs
– Conclusion
3: Not answering the question properly:
Read the question carefully and identify the question type and answer accordingly. For example if the question asks you to discuss both sides and give your opinion. So it is essential to discuss both views in separate paragraphs and give your opinion. If you fail to justify any part of the statement your answer will be considered incomplete.
4: Presenting an unclear position
You should put your clear position in front of the examiner if you just go on with the views of other people and unable to clear your position your scores will be deducted. Make sure you get a clear position from the starting of the essay and write accordingly.
Things to remember:
– Decide your opinion in the starting of the essay
– Don’t change it during the essay.
5: Spelling errors
Spelling mistakes is another issue which can reduce your scores as a single spelling error can change the meaning of the sentence. For example if you write weather instead of whether it will definitely impact the sense.
Before you complete Writing Task 2, make sure you:
– Check your writing for spelling errors
– Make corrections
– Hand writing should be clear
6: Using memorised wording
Most aspirants use memorized sentences, phrases and wording in the writing. This content can be easily recognized by the examiner and your scores can suffer.
