Why writing overview/conclusion is crucial in IELTS writing task 1

Apparently, in task 1, that is, report writing you write in words what you see in the illustration given. So, it is like an information transferring writing. Here, writing overview is really must. There are some important criterions which are needed to consider fulfilling the response requirements.

If a student wants to score band 7 or more, he/she must present a clear overview. Prior to discussing tips for writing overview, let’s have a look at ‘Task achievement’ band parameter of task 1.

Public band descriptors::

#Presents detail mechanically with no clarity of overview – Band 5

#Presents overview with aptly chosen information- Band 6

# Presents major trends, dissimilarities etcetera – Band 7

* How do we explain overview??

In general words, crux of the chart is overview. In report writing, an illustration is rendered to the test taker, where either one, two or more charts are shown. The overview paragraph of your writing should include main points such as:

-trends

-variations

-growth or development

-stages’ count

-striking features

If you are provided two charts, conclusion must cover both of them. Focus on highlighting the entire picture and obviously not merely a part of it.

Also, keep in mind that while writing overview, numbers and statistical data etcetera are not shown as its just overview.

* Where should I write the overview??

In two ways, conclusion can be given;

1. As overview delineates the clear picture of chart, so it is better to write just after the introduction. The introductory paragraph enables examiner to judge that what would be explained in the task and is written basically by paraphrasing the given statement. To elaborate, you will mention what the task is, the source of chart (if given) and when, where etcetera.

The first sentence in introduction includes description of what the test taker has analyzed. However, if there are two visuals, both are needed to be introduced. The next sentences will cover the overview. Likewise introduction, if two charts are given, both should be mentioned.

2. It can also be written at the last which means after mentioning details, after body paragraphs and must summarize the data given.

Many trainers suggest writing conclusion after in 2nd way i.e. at the end, but IELTS task 1 doesn’t seek a conclusion.

But after all the considerations, we only recommend you to write overview in second paragraph i.e. after introduction since in case you have shortage of time, you don’t miss it and write timely in your response.

* How overview is written??

It’s an easy task to frame overview and steps are given further:

1. Use appropriate connectors or linkers to depict and clarify that you are mentioning overview here. (For example, overall, all in all, in overview etcetera)

2. Present major and significant trends or features: this can be decided by questioning yourself about the chart e.g.-

Do you see increase, decrease or fluctuations in the illustration?

Are peak points or lowest points visible clearly?

Can you compare – more men/ lesser women?

What sort of change is seen in maps?

Is anything added in the map?

Is there any anticipation for the upcoming years?

So, just by figuring out these facts, you can frame a meaningful overview.

*How does the overview look?

To explain in details, we are providing some examples for different types of tasks. You will notice that no figures will be used in between and only main features will be presented.
